So me and my friend were thinking of doing a Guard and Tau alliance, we were thinking of camping them behind and aegis defence line and claiming cover. I was wondering how good are tau and guard as allies?

the tau have good mobitily (kind of, not as good as eldar but still better than imperial guard) and can cover weaknesses, such as good anti-tank tanks, powerful basic infantry, really good elite choices, and such

Or you could have humans and their equipment that has been integrated into the Tau empire and now serve the Greater Good.

Also, check out my history blog: Minimum Wage Historian, a fun place to check out history that often falls between the couch cushions.

I though this was Tactics.

Both Tau and Guard are shooty but it depends on what you take

AT: Hammer heads/ riptides/ las cannons/
AA: vendettas/ velocity tracker
ATEQ: Riptides, Demolisher cannons

take whatever combo you want just cover your bases

Before taking allies the most important question to ask is "what holes in my main army am I trying to fill?" In my opinion some of the biggest holes in the Tau Codex are a lack of fast scoring units, major assault weakness, and no psychic ability/defense.

Eldar fill two of the holes in the Tau Codex pretty easily. A single Farseer or Eldrad provides much of the psychic ability that we lack. Being able to twin-link two different units (through Guide and Prescience) can make up for lost markerlights. They also provide cheap jetbikes that can JSJ and are extremely fast scoring units.

Necrons also fill two of the holes in the Codex. Warrior squads in Nightscythes are very fast scoring units that have amazing abilities in positional dominance. While a Wraith squad with a Destroyer Lord provides a strong assault/counter-charge unit to tie up deathstars which will free up your massive shooting with the Tau detachment for your opponents scoring units.

I don't feel guard do much besides being more of the same that the Tau already do. Bringing more shooting isn't that great since it doesn't benefit from Markerlights and cannot benefit from Supporting Fire since they are not Battle Brothers. Tanks and Artillery can drop templates, but the Tau don't really lack for high strength/low AP template weapons and Tau units can remove cover with Markerlights.

Just my .02

They are doing a Tau Guard team game not taking tau or guard as allies.

Build your list together and see what is needed then fill those slots with whatever can make those roles shine.

Riptides and vendettas come to mind still.
