The way I remember the wording in last night's game, "You can choose to use Night Fight" Night fight contains the rules for rolling to determine when a particular turn is night (1st or end of game).

My understanding is that this trait has two effects. 1) you can add night fighting to a scenario or game that didn't already have it as a special rule. 2) You can for night fight to be turn one by choosing to use the night fighting rules.

In the second case, you're effectively choosing to use a rule that's already in place to guarantee turn 1 night fight.

Please correct me if either of those is wrong.

Now the question: If you do not choose to use night fighting, are you choosing to not use night fighting at all that game? Does it remove the Night Fighting rule?

This is correct. Note, however, in a game that already has the Night Fight special rule, if you choose to use the trait then it is only Night Fight for the first Player Turn instead of the first Game Turn.

This has come up before. Some say yes, some say no. GW says nothing.

You may wish to recheck that. Unless it is horribly mis-written, it should appy to the first Game Turn, not first Player Turn.

@HappyJew:
pg 124: second paragraph. "the Night Fighting rule is in effect during game turn 1." - so it affects both of the first player turns.

@Neostrider.
If the mission has the night fighting special rule, it is not guaranteed to be turn 1. You have to roll a 4+ for the first turn to see if it is in effect. If it isn't, you roll again on turn 5 to see if it is in effect for the rest of the game.

So you have a 50% chance of no night fight turn 1; and if it doesn't go off you have a 50% chance for no night fight turn 5 on.

The warlord trait allows you to guarantee that it happens turn 1 or guarantee that it doesn't happen for the entire game.

Yes. With that trait it is either turn 1 or not at all.

And per the Warlord Trait, night fighting is automatically turn 1. Turn always means Player Turn.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Off topic, would this allow you to turn off night fighting from lord of the storm?

This is not true at all.

"'Whenever a rule refers to'a turn it always means 'player turn' unless it specifically refers to a 'game turn'." (9)
