Subject: A trade I'm not sure I'm ready to make
|

Infiltrating Broodlord
|
So I started into Wargaming with the 40k Dark Vengeance box and my goal from that time has pretty much been to save money wherever possible. Warhammer on a budget if you could call it that. I think I've done a pretty good job. I have 1250 points of Eldar, 1100 points of Space Wolves and another 500 points of Tau for well under $500 dollars.
The thing is though, nobody really plays Warhammer 40k around here anymore. The players just don't come anymore or they bring Warmachine/Hordes stuff and they play that. Well, I don't really mind. I've always been pretty adaptable and after watching and playing a few games, I'm starting to consider dropping all the GW products for Privateer Press...
I put up my models for trade and I got an awesome bite. Something from every faction of Warmachine for all of my Warhammer things. I'm just not quite sure if I'm ready to go through with such a trade and give up Warhammer for good. I know Warmachine is so much clearer, but Warhammer was my first love and kind of my home. It's hard to leave it behind all together.
I'm not sure if I should post this here or in the 40k discussion as I'll get biased opinions either way, but that's okay. Maybe I'll post it in both. I'm just asking for a little help. Is it better to go with the new thing that everyone likes playing or should I stick with what I know? Is saving money on such cheap models and skirmish style gameplay worth it or will I miss out on legions of men and armored columns? Are the sweet mechanics I've been hearing so much about really that much of an improvement over the move-shoot-charge style combat of Warhammer?

The best way to do anything is in moderation. If you enjoyed 40k, hold on to an army or two. You never know when it could make a resurgence.
However, I can say that Warmachine is a very different, very fun game.
Aim for feet in both games, I would say.

Can you get rid of one/two armies for one or two factions?

What exactly is on the table for the Warmachine stuff?
If its just a random collection of stuff it might not be worth your entire 40k collection.
I'd trade the Tau and Space Wolves and keep the Eldar. You will regret getting completely out of 40k and you don't really gain anything from getting out completely.
1600 points of 40k would probably be worth roughly 50ish points of Warmachine, depending on what the offered things are.

Truth be told, all your 40k for that stuff would be a bargain. But I still recommend keeping some 40k.
I would trade the Wolves and Tau for the Retribution stuff. That will get you a good sized collection and still keep a working 40k army.

I play Khador, and I don't like that selection. I know a bit about Cryx, and it will come with pDenny, and that is a good caster. Skarre is a strong caster as well. I know nothing about Cygnar and Ret so no help there.
Honestly I'd reject the mass trade and focus on getting models from one Faction. Maybe trade for just the Ret.

The Khador and Mercs I would probably trade for a Hordes army like Circle or Legion or more Cryx models, but my friend and I both love Retribution, and I would be psyched to have a pSkarre Cryx army. I love her model and the way her army plays. Ret and Cryx were actually both at the top of my "wants" list when I made the thread.

Friend, the 40K universe is one of the best science fiction IPs out there. It is mature, rich, deep, and completely unique. The story of the Imperium and the amazing campaign the Emperor led, the Horus Heresy, the Tyranid hive fleets, the unending Orks, the ambitious energetic Tau, endangered and sneering superior Eldar, and all the other fantastic stories are just not something you'll find all mashed up together in one enormous conflicted galaxy in any other IP. I say trade one or two armies, and keep at least one. I guarantee you'll want to come back to the property one day, and at the very least you'll have one force to be your vessel and enjoy, and to begun building off of again (or be your bartering chips for a new army you feel like playing). Good luck.

It's things like this that make me really sad to be leaving the Warhammer universe... It's just so hard to hang on when I don't know anyone that plays it. OKC is kind of a Wargaming deadzone.

I've always viewed this as a long term hobby. You may not be playing it now, but in the future you may move to a different area or have new people move to where you are.

I ran into a similar situation op, and my outcome was I decided to keep one army and liquidate the rest into warmachine. If someone wants to play and has an army I'll play them...maybe (I've really gotten tired of the warhammer system and it's quirks), but if someone just wants to play something, or warmachine, I have a couple different armies for them to try out.

Seems like a pretty eclectic mess, or like the person that bought it wasn't really sure what they were doing. The Ret seems like a good start, though you'll need to pick up some things, like a Mage Hunter Strike Force and the Unit Attachment, Mage Hunter Assassins, Eiryss, and Sylys. They're the things that stick out most to me as key missing pieces.
Cryx I know less about, but both Skarre and Denny are fun in battlebox level games.
The rest is pretty meh. Croes is one of those Merc units that no one really makes great use of, and they're on the high side as far as in game point cost goes.
The Khador stuff has a Weapon and Unit attachment but no unit (looks like Cryx has the same issue with the Sea Witch), so you're basically just looking at a Battlebox, extra caster, extra version of the same caster from the battlebox, and a Mortar. A start, but again, would take some investment to really get to a decent point level, moreso than the Ret in my opinion.

I say keep who you have the most points with or which one you want to keep the most, and get the Ret (seems like a great deal from what I have seen, but I cannot really see since I am not well versed with that faction) and Cryx with one of the armies you don't want really and have a good amount to trade. With that being said, I would say take a look at other factions a bit that are on there for trade and do not trade as much just in case, stick with Cryx or Ret with if one does not suit you at all.

Just to give everyone (including myself) a bit of closure on this thread, here's what we agreed upon:
My Space Wolves, including their current edition codex and all of my Eldar models for everything listed above, but the Cygnar battle box was removed and a unit of 20 kroot to expand my fledgling Tau army was added to the trade.
I'm really happy with this mix of advancing my Tau Empire and trading away all of these extra things I never play with in favor of starting Warmachine.
