The Restrictions I Put On My Tallarn Lists:
- Missile Launchers are the only HW teams allowed in Infantry Squads.
- All units able to take the FW Desert Raider special rule, must take it in lists of 750 points or more.
- 1 unit of 10 Rough Riders is required for lists of 1000 points or more.
- 2 units of Mukaali Rough Riders are required for lists of 1000 points or more.
- No vehicles besides Chimera Armoured Transports and Hydra Flak Tank Batteries are allowed.
- Al'Rahem is required in lists of 1000 points or more.

So half your army is just basic lasguns, and you have a single melta bomb + krak grenades as your only anti-vehicle option. The question here is not whether you are going to get tabled every game, it's how many turns will it take for you to get tabled.

Lol, truth.

My logic there is in a 500 pt game there isn't often armor 12+, so the hunting lances COULD do something.

That's backwards. 500 point games are the best place for AV 13/14, since people think like you and don't bring counters to it. A marine player that brings a LR Crusader against that list automatically wins, and every IG list should either have flyers or AV 14.

This will probably be a bit better:

Company Command Squad (Lascannon, Vox-Castor)

Rough Rider Squad (2 Additional Models, Sergeant w/Power Axe, 2 Flamers)
Rough Rider Squad (2 Additional Models, Sergeant w/Power Axe, 2 Flamers)

I mean if they do have a 14 armor vehicle at least I can use 'bring it down' on the Lascannon, lol.

A single lascannon is unreliable at best, and guess what they're going to target first. Instead of wasting points on power axes and voxes you need to put melta guns in your veteran squads and preferably give them a transport.

Also, the voxes are pointless. The only thing you can give orders to is the vets, and since they only have lasguns you can't give them any orders that matter. You're just wasting those points.

Better, but still pretty bad. The CCS is a waste so you might as well take a lord commissar instead, and the vets have guns but without transports they probably won't survive to use them. Meanwhile you're wasting your lances by taking flamers, ruining the entire purpose of the unit. If you insist on using rough riders for some weird reason this would be much better:

Lord commissar (in vet squad)

Vets, 3x melta, Chimera (ML/HF)
Vets, 3x melta, Chimera (ML/HF)

Rough riders (no upgrades)
Rough riders (no upgrades)

Total: 490

Now your vets might make it to a target, and with the Chimeras giving you LOS blocking you might actually get a rough rider squad into charge range before it dies.

Hmm, well... that makes a lot of sense... but... is it weird I want to pump more points into those Rough Rider units. So they become a more "important" part of my army, lol.

It's more a theme-y list.

P.S. I think the Flamers are probably a good idea, for only 5 points... Flamers are pretty damn good.

The problem is you're trying to do it at 500 points. At such a low point level you don't have room to do it without sacrificing "core" units, so you end up with a bunch of unsupported rough riders getting cut down by bolter fire. If you want to bring 3+ units of rough riders start playing normal 1000-2000 point games where you have the room to bring more than the bare minimum.

Except they replace your lances, which is the whole reason to take rough riders. You kill more in the shooting phase if you can get into flamer range without dying, but you kill a lot less in the following assault because two of your models are hitting at STR3/AP-/I3 instead of STR5/AP3/I5. So really you're spending 5 points to make your unit worse.

Well yeah, lances are the reason I take the unit, but as long as I'm getting that close and personal I might as well get a Flamer if I can.

I'd be down 2 STR5 AP3 attacks in close combat and up a Flamer template. That'll hit 4-6 models at least. Sounds like a pretty good trade. Plus I mean... the Flamer dude would still get 3 STR3 AP- hits... lol, for what it's worth...

That's very optimistic, especially since rough riders are cavalry and can charge consistently from 6-9" away. At that range flamers aren't even getting to shoot.

Oh god, you're right. I didn't even think about that, lol.

Well could I use plasma guns? They have 24" range... but sadly no assault.

Grenade launchers would probably be worse than the Hunting Lance.

Meltagun would probably be the best special weapon, and that would probably be a bad idea...

So... if I used a list like this:

Lord Commissar

Veteran Squad (3 Meltaguns, Chimera w/Multi-Laser, Heavy Flamer)
Veteran Squad (3 Meltaguns, Chimera w/Multi-Laser, Heavy Flamer)

Rough Rider Squad (Sergeant w/Power Axe)
Rough Rider Squad

Then how would I field them? Just set the Chimeras up, place the Rough Riders behind them, then when they get close enough to a viable target, run around the Chimera and charge?

It's the Hydra Flak Tank.

It would be a bit unreasonable to take one in such a low point round, as it would have to fire snaps at the land targets, and the enemy might not even bring a flier. If I were to find it necessary, I would do something like:

Lord Commissar

Veteran Squad (3 Meltaguns, Chimera w/Multi-Laser, Heavy Flamer)
Veteran Squad

Rough Rider Squad (Sergeant w/Power Axe)
Rough Rider Squad (Sergeant w/Power Sword)

Hydra Flak Tank

(NOTE: I might replace The Lord Commissar with a Company Command to make that empty Vet. Squad a little less useless.)

With such a low point game, personally I would just stock up on infantry, and chimeras. I'd use a list like this:

lord commissar

Vet squad (demolitions, meltagun x2)

infantry squad
infantry squad

heavy weapons squad (lascannon)

chimera
chimera

this puts you at 485 points, leaving 15 extra to put whatever into the infantry squads or chimeras. The demolitions and lascannon can be your tank hunters as well. Hope this helps!

You can't get Infantry Squads without a Platoon Command.

Oh, and I've decided to play with ForgeWorld rules. I'd like to use a list like:

Lord Commissar

Veteran Squad (Desert Raiders, Sergeant w/Plasma Pistol, 3 Plasma Guns)
Veteran Squad (Desert Raiders, Sergeant w/Plasma Pistol, 3 Plasma Guns)

Rough Rider Squad (Sergeant w/Power Sword and Meltabomb)
Rough Rider Squad (Sergeant w/Power Axe and Meltabomb)

I like that, but it has little to take on 14 armor.

oh yea, duh haha. I haven't used rough riders yet, so i sadly cant help there. I probably wouldn't take just plasma guns though. I haven't played forge world rules, but gets hot is a pain for me. I'd use

Vet squad 3 plasma's
vet squad 3 melta's

or you could have 2 vets take a lascannon with a BS of 4 as back up for your 14 armor.

The 'Desert Raider' Forge World special rule is an upgrade that allows the entire unit to reroll to hit rolls of 1 in the shooting phase. Meaning the Plasma Guns will almost never get hot.
