So rendring with a sniper rifle means it's an automatic wound at AP2...so would the model that was shot still get its cover save?

In my perticular case, an Ork Biker boy (with a perma 4+ cover save thanks to its smoke cloud)?

Really? I thought the automatic wound somehow nagated the cover, what with well, automatic wound and sniper rifle and all..

Rending (not rendring) means that 6's to wound count as ap2. That's all it does to non vehicle models.

Yes, it automatically wounds. Then you get to make saves (in this case cover and invulnerable)

the "wounds automatically" thing refers more to a Strength/Toughness comparison. Sniper rifles count as S3, but if you shoot a T8 Wraithlord, you still wound it on a 6 due to the Sniper rule, whereas I don't believe a normal S3 weapon could hurt T8.

Sniper rifles are str x. They always wound on a 4+, regardless of toughness. So great against tough things and pretty crappy against low toughness targets.

So sniper rifles would wound a wraithlord, and a grot, on a 4+.

A sniper rifle is ONLY S3 against targets with an AV; against other targets they are S:X, and wound on a 4+

Just a note because I'm not sure what you are responding to. A rend is only AP2 against non-vehicles. They do not benefit from +1 on the damage chart against vehicles.

Cover is only ignored by things that explicitly ignore it.

Automatic wounds simply refers to the strength vs toughness comparison. Some strengths cannot wound certain toughness values, but a few special rules bypass it. They do not ignore anything they are not explicitly stated to.
