Every once in a while, I like to put Burnas Boyz in a wagon. I did this against some Necrons, and eventually they inflicted a crew shaken result upon the battlewagon in the shooting phase.

My rulebook states (page 80) that crew shaken on transports,
Passengers can only fire snap shots in their next shooting phase.

So obviously, my burnas can't shoot on my next turn. However, does this affect their ability to fire overwatch in his assault phase from inside the wagon? We almost ran into the situation, but his charge roll barely failed. He seemed to think that there was a FAQ or Eratta stating that the snap shots bit applied until rather than during the end of my next shooting phase, which would thus deny them their overwatch shot.

Was he mistaken or am I just being a moron for my inability to find where this has been changed?

Well... it's a good question. It does state that it can only fire snapshots, and wall of fire isn't technically a snap shot, it's a different type of overwatch. HIWPI I would allow it as being a type of snap shot.

on a side note, you seem to be doing overwatch slightly wrong. You can fire overwatch even though he fails his charge roll. In fact, you're obliged to do your overwatch BEFORE he rolls his range. It matters since the charge may fail because of guys in the front getting killed off.

Usually that's how I do overwatch, but here we basically pretended that the attempted charge didn't happen because we couldn't quite agree on how to resolve it. However, it seems to me that "during my next shooting phase" does not include his own assault phase.

That is very much true. I don't have my rulebook here, but if that wording is used, then it isn't affecting anything but what it specifies.

ALL overwatch is a snapshot; that is why blasts and, without Wall of Fire, Templates cannot be used for Overwatch

Wall of Fire lets you fire templates during Overwatch, even though they are usually a snapshot. Being told you may only shapshot anyway has no bearing on it - this is the same restriction you are already exempt from

So even if you ignore timing, you can fire

Wall of fire lets you overwatch even if it gotta snapshot.

It does say on page 80 (wall of death) that

Template weapons can fire overwatch, even though they cannot fire snap shots.

That pretty concretely declares that template weapons can fire overwatch, but it's still not a snap shot.

Also, how would crew stunned work with this. By the "WoD is simulated snap shot" logic, I would get no overwatch. But by the "during my next shooting phase" logic, I would still get to make overwatch.

How can you overwatch fire anything? Your Burna boyz are in the truck. I assault the truck. The truck can't overwatch fire at me and the boys are not the target of the charge. So no overwatch shots at all.
Or does "Open Topped" allow you to do it?

Check Page 80 For the transports and Assault rules.

By default, units can shoot out of fire points for overwatch. Open-topped means the entire hull is a fire point. Ergo, even if the vehicle were not open topped, I could have 1-5 troops fire overwatch depending on the number of firepoints with LoS to the charging unit.
