This is pretty situation specific but I think it might be a common issue for Tau.

the common tactic now is to charge with one unit to burn up the tau overwatch then send in a second unit for the assault.

Here is the situation, tau crisis suit team, 3 suits all equipped with 2 plasma rifles and target lock. Unlike other wargear the tau target lock states " A model with target lock can shoot at a different target to the rest of his unit." (pg 69 tau codex) thus no limitation of only the shooting phase like the multi-tracker.

Scenario:
the crisis suit team is charged by a single ork nob. Crisis suit A fires over watch, crisis suit B and C declare they will fire overwatch at the second charge unit of ork boys.

so if the nob is not killed, the unit is locked in combat no second overwatch? BUT if the nob is killed, then Crisis suit B and C are still entitled to one overwatch, the unit is not locked in combat so they could fire at the second charging unit via target locks?

behind you!

I think the rule is you may only fire overwatch once per turn, which means when the first unit charges in, you either do or you don't at that point. If you do you no longer have the option of firing overwatch. It is irrelevant if you are capable of shooting at more than one target.

I would like to point out that the restriction of the multitracker only working in the shooting phase does not prevent you from firing overwatch with multiple weapons... if you look at the rule that tells you that models can only shoot 1 weapon, you will notice that it also is only restricted to the shooting phase.

page 51 of the brb under "more than one weapon"

Either overwatch is treated exactly like a shooting phase and thus multi trackers work, or overwatch is not a shooting phase, so the more than one weapon rule doesnt apply. Either way, your crisis suits, broadsides, and riptides can fire away with more than one weapon in overwatch and interceptor.

z3n1st - It would seen that you are correct, the limitation rule for overwatch is once per unit not per model.

BarBoBot - I am aware of the many endless threads regarding multi-tracker. Until an FAQ is put out, our gaming group plays it one way. I put that in this thread to to preempt any such similar arguments.

Shooting, on a unit level, is done at the same time. You can't shoot and kill the Ork Nob before you shoot at the other boyz. It is literally impossible by way of game rules.

Roll all your shots and then roll all your wounds. If you want to roll stuff sepretly then you can, but it still counts as being rolled at the same time.

How is this still a question that gets brough up?

Lots and lots and lots.

If your aware of the discussion, then why is your group playing it that a crisis suit cant fire overwatch with 2 weapons?

If multitrackers only allow you to fire 2 weapons in the shooting phase, and the restriction for firing only 1 weapon is also only in the shooting phase, then where is the conflict?

No matter which side of the arguement you agree with, crisis suits can fire more than just one weapon in overwatch.

please explain how your group came to any other conclusion.

"Overwatch is resolved like a normal shooting phase" page 21. So any restrictions for the multi tracker that happen in the shooting phase also happen during overwatch.

Regardless as said unit shooting is all resolved at once, while overwatch is resolved per unit charging, you cannot fire once from a unit and then fire again at another target.
