Because I go to school out of state and can’t play 40k when I’m gone, my friend and I decided to celebrate the summer with a large, month long campaign. Although he’s mostly a tourney player, we both enjoy getting immersed into the fluff and playing more narrative driven battles. These will be my first battle reports for dakka along with my first written campaign, so bear with me as I work out the kinks.

Segmentum Ultima, Planet Periculli
A large, high-gravity hive world, Periculli provides machinery and manpower for the surrounding planets in its system. A large number of research facilities have been placed here in order to test weapons and other technology on a variety of targets, while guard recruits are taken from the multiple techno-gangs that run the underhives of each hive city. Located on the Eastern Fringe of the galaxy, the planet has suffered many times at the hands of xenos. Constantly ravaged by orks and eldar, defenses have been increased and the PDF are placed on constant alert. Its prime hive, Vogen, is the center of the planet’s research, containing the top facilities and researchers in the system along with many ancient technologies from forgotten eras.
Current status: UNKNOWN. Reports of unspecified attack received two months ago at Outpost Alpha9. Attempts to make contact again were unsatisfactory. Investigation force sent to planet departed six weeks ago. No reports received from investigation force since departure.
+++terminal closed+++

Approaching the planet from behind one of Periculli’s 4 moons, the Gal’leath battleship deftly maneuvered its way between the gravity fields. Moving slowly as to avoid the attention of the tyranid ships that surrounded the planet, Shas’O Al Eurii Aloh had to admit that the view offered from the bridge was superb, in a morbidly beautiful way. He could see where the tyranids had ravaged the planet, stripping it completely of any living tissue. The transformation of an entire planet into a barren wasteland could be seen from here miles above the planet. One could just make out the few remaining pockets of resistance left, though they hardly mattered. Shas’O Al knew that the planet was doomed and that those on the planet would all be dead within a few weeks. Another imperial planet lost was of no concern to him; the humans could afford to lose billions of lives a day, not the Enclaves. He had not earned his title Coldstrike by troubling himself with those who did not deserve the Enclaves’ help. Besides, his mission was of greater importance than the deaths of some Gue’la on a forgotten world.

Pulling up the map once again on the terminal, Coldstrike examined the outlay of the hive city. Orbital reconnaissance had revealed much of the city, but it was still a mess of jumbled ruins and claustrophobic alleys. The layout followed typical Gue’la planning, forcing as many buildings as possible into every space. How they could manage to live in such a city continued to baffle Coldstrike. Looking back at the map, he tried to imagine once again where his objectives could be. The Enclaves had sent his cadre out to this planet to infiltrate the hive and find two things. The first were the military records of the system. Being the largest planet with the most development in the area, Periculli was the governing world for the surrounding system, and therefore kept the records of every guard regiment stationed throughout the area. Access to those records would allow the Enclaves to map the Guard deployments and discover which planets were ripe for raiding. Finding them would be easy enough; they would either be stored in the planetary palace or the Cadian HQ at the edge of the hive. The second objective would more difficult to locate. It was rumored that Hive Vogen was the site of an experimental cloning facility funded by the planetary governor. Where it was located in the hive, if at all, was unknown, but the benefit of the cloning technology for the Enclaves greatly outweighed the risk in looking for it.

Originally the cadre was supposed to have infiltrated Hive Vogen and discovered the whereabouts of their goals. However, the arrival of a splinter fleet from Kraken had altered that plan. Not that this was a bad thing for the cadre; Coldstrike understood that this change of events ultimately just allowed his force to avoid the risky infiltration all together. It also provided an opportunity to take any survivors without much a struggle, who could be used for information or labor at another time. When faced with a death at the claws of the tyranids, captivity under the Enclaves became a much brighter alternative. Coldstrike closed the terminal and looked out at the wasted planet. They would strike hard, they would strike fast, and they would retrieve the records and technology before the tyranids even recognized their presence. Rising from the command chair, Coldstrike strode towards the armory to don his battlesuit. Let the tides of war flow once again. Shi v Shovah.

Here’s the map of Hive Vogen that I will be infiltrating.

This campaign is going to be a mix of 40k battles, RPG, and STG games. I have two specific objectives: I need to find the military records—which could be in either the Cadian HQ or the palace—and the cloning facility. Along the way, there will be other unknown objective that I could discover, along with taking any survivors still remaining in the hive. I’m bringing a force of 5,000 points of Tau, but can reinforce along the way as different areas will have resources that I can use to build/upgrade units. I will be facing an opposing force of over 40,000 points of tyranids spread throughout the city and the tunnel system underneath. They will act in a semi-random fashion under the control of the hive mind. They will also be able to be reinforced by collecting biomatter after battles and creating new organisms.

My goal is to go in, grab what I can, and get out before being devoured by an awakening hive mind. Hopefully I will be able to keep these updates coming consistently. Watch this space for the first couple of turns and battle reports.

We LOVE the Vogen campaign in our house and are currently playing through it again. We have a 2'x3' dry erase version of that map we use to keep track of stuff. Very interested to see what you do with one of my favorite settings in 40k since Cityfight. Tau vs. Bugs makes it all the more interesting!

It was a GW campaign release some years ago. I remember reading the original campaign document, although I can not really recall much in the way of exact details.

Like watching other people play video games (badly) while blathering about nothing in particular? Check out my Youtube channel: joemamaUSA!

Hey everybody. Sorry for the thread-necro. Just wanted to explain whats been going on the past couple weeks.
My friend and I got through about 5 rounds of our campaign and played 7 battles. However after the first week, the tyranid player ran into some family problems at home and hasn't been able to play for the past 2 weeks. So unfortunately, the campaign has been put on hold indefinitely. Hopefully, things will be cleared up soon enough to leave time to complete. I'll try to keep things poster here.
