Is it supposed to be slow and insidious with you not realizing what is happening until it's too late. Or do these guys know fully well the path they have chosen, and embrace it.

Also how much free will do they have after becoming corrupted.

Pretty sure both are possible depending on the circumstances.

I swear I think those two have a hate-crush on each other sometimes.

Chaos is fueled by emotion, which is fueled by thought. To be corrupted, you have to be at least somewhat willing. Calm, collected, pacifistic monks don't turn to Khorne, and highly optimistic young businessmen don't turn to Nurgle.

It can be subtle. Its possibly that you don't know what you're getting into. In the end though, part of you wants it. Part of you craves it.

Some of them realize it and some of them don't. And all the shades of grey in between.

Likewise with the free will question. Some of them are essentially the same person, while some of them are just shells of the person they used to be, meat puppets piloted by a malignant 'other' force.

Check out Aaron Dembski-Bowden's Night Lords trilogy (and undoubtedly his upcoming Black Legion series) for some great examples of the gamut that can be run. Vandred was pretty willing to be corrupted, and has almost no free will. Uzas refuses to worship any of the Chaos deities, but isn't going to turn down any power they give him for 'free.' (Of course, everything he does with it just brings him more and more into the Chaos gods' power.) Talos likes to think he has complete free will, and isn't corrupted by Chaos at all. Lucoryphus, Deltrian, Cyrion, all of them exhibit differing levels of corruption, and differing levels of awareness, control, and willingness in regards to said corruption.

Hope that helps!

In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium, there is no free will, there is only slavish devotion to powers far beyond mortal comprehension.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.
