I was reading the 6th edition rulebook this evening & it mentioned that the Emperor is guarded by "The Companions" which consisted of 300 Adeptus Custodes I believe? Now, are "The Companions" different from the Adeptus Custodes in that they are the elite of the elite or is the entirety of the Adeptus Custodes simply 300 elite warriors? Are any of the present day Adeptus Custodes guarding the emperor warriors who fought during the Horus Heresy? If not how does one even become one of the Adeptus Custodes? I mean aren't they like even more bad*ss then chapter masters etc? Do they ever leave emperors side to fight outside Terra?

The Custodes never leave Terra. Never.

I think those 300 are simply the guys present at the Golden Throne while the other Custodes guard the whole Imperial Palace.

They only left Terra on the direct order of the Emperor and after he died and was entombed in the Golden Throne they never left the planet again.

Actually, post-heresy, one of them (a custode, not a companion) left for Pluto when it was invaded by the Purge (I could have the planet wrong, but I think it was Pluto). Or was it the Tainted? It was the warband that was rumoured to at once be led by Mortarion himself.
