Do they maintain the T of the guns in cc, or their own profile?

What does page 46 of the rulebook say?

Using the guns' toughness only applies to shooting. In close combat you would use majority toughness as normal.

I disagree.

Page 46: ARTILLERY: Assault: 'If an artillery unit is charged, then moved the charging models into base contact with the crew and guns as normal. No wounds can be allocated to the guns. All engaged enemies roll To Hit and To Wound against the crew (even if they are only engaged with the guns).'

If an assaulting unit only wounds against the crew, then the Toughness of the guns is ignored for majority consideration.

I don't write the rules. My ego just lives and dies by them one model at a time.

Except that's not how the wounding rules actually work. The gun is part of the unit. The gun cannot have wounds allocated to it or directly attacked.
That does not mean that the toughness of the gun is not figured into majority toughness.

Except you are told roll To Hit and To Wound against the crew and not the gun.

And you are.
How do you figure out the toughness to roll against? The rules say majority toughness.

Why?

The rules don't tell you to only include the toughness of those models you can hurt. The Artillery rules say that you roll to wound against the crew. They don't say to ignore the guns for determining the unit's Toughness.

It would make more sense for it to work that way, but sense and 40K rules don't always go hand in hand.

For most I can see yes, but the thunderfire cannon for example would have only 1 crew member

By the time you get close enough to assault them? Not necessarily.

And yeah, Thunderfire Cannons.
