Virulent Space Marine dedicated to Nurgle
|
Im close to finishing my nurgle daemon army, left for last are my plague drones.
My intention was to paint them in such a fashion that they look like flying grubs, sickly white, but with a pinkish/reddish hue hidden underneath their white glossy transparent skin, more pronounced i guess near the shadow areas.
I haven't tested it, but I was intending to paint them magenta (the bodies of the flies) then shade with a red ink, after that has dried i wanted to airbrush with white ink heavily thinned with a acrylic flowimprover and airbrush cleaner, multiple thin layers. The flowimprover has a similair effect as a varnish I have found, but never "frosts". I live in the Netherlands and weather is often very humid and I have allready given up on using matt varnishes.
Anyone else have any ideas on how to achieve the effect I am looking for? Something like sugar glace on a donut, slightly translucent...

It sounds almost like what it looks like when varnish goes on badly. Maybe wait until it is VERY humid and matte varnish them from too far away on purpose.

Just pretend they are nurgles little treats and when you bite down on them they are filled with puss and dead flesh and fingersized maggots that wiggle down your throat and windpipe... There, fixed that for you.

If you hit the model with really watered down white after the fact it should gather in recesses and leave a milky white slimy look. Spraying it from a distance with too much matte varnish (as you can't control the humidity outside) will also "frost" your model too.

Vallejo make a glaze medium, try that with some white paint?
Somewhere in the back of my brain, I seem to remember a trick with adding PVA glue to the thinned paint to make it spread evenly over the surface, rather than pool in recesses, but don't quote me on that..

Not sure why you would have problems using matt varnish in this lovely climate in the netherlands hehe xD surely the UK gets as much rain as here? you could try painting it the other way around i suppose, by painting it white and then airbrushing extremely light layers of pink/magenta in the right places

Vallejo make a white glaze ink, that seems to be thick out of the dropper but thins down really well. I use it for my white blends.

Since this is a brand new process and you've been given a variety of options, I'd suggest painting up some sprues and or throw away models the pink you want and then trying it out first. Just a cut down on the need to strip and repaint a bit. (Probably unneeded advice, I know!)
