This. Dakka has no lawyers on it.
If anyone on Dakka claims to be a lawyer: Disregard. They're not YOUR lawyer.

Actually buy it from the owner him/herself or did you go through a realtor? Your best bet though is contacting a real estate lawyer...just curious...its not freaking asbestos pipe lining is it?

Look up the current building codes/requirment in regard to those. Is it with safety standards? Meet current codes?

Not trying to lecture you. Just helping you "arm" yourself with knowledge of the subject matter so when you do talk to a lawyer you don't seem "clueless"

i appreciate it.
There is nothing in PA that says you can't have knob and tube wiring in a home, provided you have a minimum of 60amp service in the home.
The violation would be that in the sellers disclosure they said there was no knob and tube wiring in the home...
they updated the electrical system between 1997 and 2012 in which case the seller would have known about the knob and tube that was left over. If he didn't then the electrician that did the work lied about the work and there is a whole other ball of wax going on!
I'll be contacting a real estate lawyer soon.

From what I could gather in my 60second read... its an older style of wireing that could cause a fire. Also some insurance companies won't cover you if you have the old wireing.

I was going to suggest donning a giant chicken costume, getting a dumptruck full of cement and... well I guess Polonius' advice is better. But not nearly as much fun.

The house where random breakers trip and the basement smells like ozone?
Sounds harmless enough

Oddly enough it wasn't because of that gak, it was due to an external outlet, but yes that house totes harmless!
