Was discussing rock hard oldschool games with a mate the other night, like 80s/early 90s stuff.
We came up with the following lists of beasts:
Platoon - C64/amstrad
Predator - C64/amstrad
Operation Wolf - Amstrad/arcade
T2 - Megadrive
Street Fighter 1 - arcade
Granted, theres probably some sort of inverted rose-tinted glasses effect going on - its possible if we played these today we'd finish them in one sitting but at the time they were undoubtedly rock hard for our young minds and reflexes.
Any others that stick out in your memory?
Can include more recent games of course too.

Another one I recalled, Silent Service on the Amstrad.

Nah, but it is a lot to do with hindsight. I remember finding Alien on the SEGA Megadrive to be difficult as a child, but coming back to it I realize that I just sucked at it. =P

I actually beat battletoads back in the day, snake level 2 = nightmare of memorization.

Oh, gods, this. As a kid the hardest game I ever ran into was called Probotector. I later found out this was the heavily plot-edited UK version of Contra: Hard Corps. 3 lives, a single hit was a life gone with no shields or anything of the like, and bullets and surprise attacks *everywhere*. You had to memorise what was coming up to have a chance of proceeding.

Ghosts and Ghouls? All the joy of Contra, but without that silly "main character having a ranged attack" nonsense.
I watched a 4 player race of battletoads on youtube a while back. Completely hilarious, most profanity I've heard flung around in my life. That rat race man...that rat race.

I played this on my cousin's Gameboy eons ago and I loved it.

I never could finish one of the Zork games, I think it was 2. The text parser was brutal. Also, Quest for Glory 2. I cannot even state the frustration the fire elemental caused.

Ohhhh, I remember that. It was pretty much a case of go Donatello or go home... if you let him die, you restarted. Plain and simple, he was THAT good.
And damn, that electric jelly underwater level...!!
