Quick question: Battle brothers IC's can join units.

Could I make a unit that only has IC's from both armies?
i.e. Lysander and a Tau Commander.

seems like a could. Reason being...they would deep strike. commander has 2+, 4++ T5 and feel no pain. So my unit would to T5 average with a 2++, 3++ or 4++FNP depending on which direct the firing comes from. Commander has either 2 fusion blasters or 2 plasmas (neither twin linked for more dakka while having enough room for systems.

They would deep strike somewhere, Commander can blow some stuff up then next turn Lysander does some work. I've also found that my commander built this way lasts quite a while in CC with his T5, WS4, 2+, 4++FNP.

IC's can join each other. Battle Brothers can have ICs join each other's units. So yes, this seems perfectly fine.

seems that way to me as well. Let's add another wrinkle to this:

I take a Crisis Bodyguard unit. So, the commander and Lysander could both join it correct? Not sure if I would do this since I would lose my T5 average, but its a thought. Allows me to soften up targets more.

Yes, you can join a Riptide. Being a monstrous creature does not prevent an independent character from joining the Riptide.

Independent characters are forbidden from joining units that always consist of a single model. Riptides do not fall into that category thanks to the drones that they may take.

There is some doubt about whether you can or can't join a Riptide, since it can take drones and therefore skirts the 'always a unit consisting of a single model' rule. If the drones were indeed intended to count as separate members of the unit, (and I believe that they were) then you can join an IC to a Riptide. (Unless I've missed something, which is always possible. )

Given the Drone rules explicitly state that drones bought as unit upgrades count as members of the unit in all respects, it's pretty safe to assume they meant them to count as members of the unit.

but would you have to buy the drones to pull it off?

No.

No, same as you dont have to have 2 carnifex in a unit in order to join an IC - the unit has to just have the *possibility* of having more than one model for an IC to be able to join

All examples given so far are legal, even the Riptide. However, I'm not sure why you'd want to do this. It's a horribly expensive way to waste either model's power. Every turn in combat is a waste of the Tau commander or Riptide, and every turn hanging back and not getting stuck in is a waste of Lysander.

The best results come from mixing units. Commanders can use kit to boost a unit's firing, and Lysander extends the lifespan of any Tau infantry unit by about 12 times :p
