Clearing out my gaming closet,.saw it., remember playing it, and having lots of fun. No other rts like it in my opinion. Does anyone still play this, and if not, at least a trip down memory lane for those who did.

I play it against one of my mates on Steam occasionally.
It's a really good game, however he hasn't quite worked out the concept of. "If I keep on trying to do the same strategy every single match I play and I keep on losing, I should probably change my strategy..."
Cue giant fleet of bombers trying to attack me, which are immediately shot down by the giant fleet of fighters that I had waiting for him to do it...

I'm not good enough at it to play it against other people. I tend to just hold off the CPUs until I have the ability to completely overwhelm them with superior numbers and technology.
It explains why most of my campaign missions took hours; I just wanted to get as top-tier as possible to complete the final objective.

I think most peoples campaign missions took hours. - Probably 4-5 hours is average.
I don't play against other people who are much more experienced at the game than me. However against assorted mates, it seems that you can get a pretty good game out of it all as long as you work out the basic build order to start off with quickly.
If anyone wants a game at some point, I'm "Compel" on Steam.

I'm gak at any multiplayer game that relies on certain starting build orders in order to actually be playable.
I've just about got the hang of Huns in AoEII, and that's only thanks to the re-release of it on Steam - years ago when I first played it I built whatever the hell I wanted - and because forgetting to build houses is no longer an issue.
It's really, really easy to break my concentration on most games when it comes to macro, and CPUs aren't exactly as good at capitalising on that as human players are.
TL;DR - I dislike playing games where if I make an error in the first few minutes I needn't bother playing anymore.

The nutshell for Supreme Commander is something like...
1) Build Mass Extractor
2) Build Power Generator beside Mass Extractor
3) Build Second Power Generator beside (2)
4) Build Land Factory so it connects to all 3.
5) Send commander off to build other Mass Extractors
6) While that's going on, build 3-5 engineers.
7) Build a couple more power generators.
Then do whatever you want...

Yeah, if you get your CD Key for your physical disk, you go into steam then do "Add a game" in the bottom left hand corner.
Then
"Activate a product on Steam"
Follow the instructions and type in your CD key for both games.
You'll then download a new version of the game with Steam support, allowing you to play multiplayer against him.

That 'do whatever you want thing' is where I trip up because, as I mentioned earlier, if I feth up the early stages - and I will - then I might as well just quit the game there and then. I can never get a stable economy going until deep into tier three, and that's only because T3 generators produce enough for me to pretty much ignore my energy income.
I can never find the point where I should start progressing through the tiers, and either progress too early and crash my eco, or advance too late and find myself far on the back foot.
I also struggle with how many engineers to dedicate to building, and how many to dedicate to assisting. I can have all my engineers build, or all my engineers boost unit production, but I can never strike a balance between the two, or at least never enough of one for me to be content with it.
All this is before my military problems, where I can never find a balance in units and usually just end up spamming the best one I can find until it's countered, at which point I spam the counter-counter.
I'm pretty much just playing a game where I have no idea what I'm doing.

Well, I end up going immediately onto tier 2 after then. However, that's possibly just cause I tend to do the '10 minutes' free pass in my games.
I've got a general rule of thumb of 5 engineers for each tier.
Then the lower tier engineers assist the higher tier engineers when the new ones come out. It help keeps things manageable.
The main thing it comes to avoid Mass Fabricators like the devil.
But yeah, I'm up for a game at any point - Compel on steam.

Oh my gosh supreme commander two was trash.
I mean really. They totally ruined the coolness of a economy that wasn't in any other game, made experemmntals have a freking FACTORY, and took out that last race. (forget the name...)
Ugh. But ya. I always did cybran. Like their back story and units.
Once played a game vs friend, nuked his base, but he had got his command out.
Spent next twenty minutes launching nukes into the ocean hoping I would hit his commander. Finally did, after like 15 launches. Fun.
The only flaw I ever found In the game was that if you weren't playing it on a fast computer, it was living hell. Took up so much space for me, and until I got a fast computer, it was at like 1 frame per second.

Yah, Supcom1 was a real resource hog as far as CPU goes. I think they had that more or less fixed by the time FA came out, right? I forget.
IMO the minimap in that game, and how it worked on a secondary monitor, is the gold standard for all RTS games.

There were already factory experimentals in SC1, and the Seraphim were only around for Forged Alliance.
I never installed Supreme Commander 2, because I had the ill fortune to flick through the manual first to see all the cool new units, and stumbled upon the Aeon "Comic Relief" Illuminate. The entire faction is just a huge joke. Gone is the 'Spectre', the 'Infinity', the 'Harbinger', and the 'Serenity', replaced by the 'Fistoosh', the 'Weedoboth', the 'Wilfindja', and the 'Bodaboom'. In fact, every single one of the SC2 Illuminate units has a silly, stupid, childish, asinine name. The Cybrans don't escape this, either, with their Cybrannosaurus Rex, but the Illuminate suffer the most by far. I'm not even going to touch on the fact that the Illuminate have no naval units for reasons unknown.
I never even took the disc out.

Well. while Supcom2 was definitely a downgrade to the series IMO, it's still worth playing at least once I think. I enjoyed the story of it, and also, they did have one very interesting mechanic. You don't "replace" units like you did in Supcom1 - you don't build lvl 1 robots, and then level 2 robots, etc. Instead you simply have a standard robot, and when you climb the tech tree you simply upgrade that one unit over and over - by giving it another gun, by giving it a shield, etc.
I thought it was a neat mechanic, and a good way of getting more mileage out of the things you had already built as well.

I lost any and all interest in it after reading the manual. It's not a matter of "I'm not playing a game with stupid-sounding units" it's one of "Wow, I really don't want to play a game where the developers bastardised stuff to this extent".
It felt like a kick in the teeth for supporting the series.

I forgot just how badly mission 4 of the FA campaign can feth you over if you're not prepared. Completely underestimated everything thanks to misremembering things from the first time I played it, and had to restart in the end, but if I hadn't already learned to delay completing the final part of your first objective until you're all teched up and ready, I'd have received a colossal beat-down even with the restart.
As it stood, though, I spammed shields, SAMs, and Bricks (should really have gone for the same number of Soul Rippers, but I like the concept of mass-destruction on both sides, and there's something oddly satisfying about looking over the map and seeing the burned-out husks of hundreds of units scattered around) and held out perfectly fine, save a few shields collapsing because I couldn't micro what Soul Rippers I had AND deal with mobile artillery at the same time, but Hives took care of any damage sustained.
Also, the Resource Allocation upgrades on the ACU and support commanders are hilariously OP.
