So I recently did a game vs nids with my Mechdar and he took 2 flyrants 3carnuvexes in pods, doom in pod, and gaunts in pod.
Basically everything of his underperformed expect for the spore pods. Those killed and did more than like anything else lol.
Needless to say he was pretty angry.
But is their any other stories of underperforming.models, where crappy ons do well?

I had my vindicare completely miss 2 turns in a row (2+/4+ to hit) so decided he wasn't meant to shoot this game and charged him at some Grey Hunters. He eventually won combat.

Suppose my Grot squad and a loota mob deserves one mention;
One match against a friends blood angel "Dante wing", (an army consisting mostly of Dante, the sanguinor and two-three groups of sanguinary guard , about 1000 points I think).
My opponent was deepstriking the greater part of his army, leaving only the sanguinor and one group of guard on the table. I put most of the horde on the left and middle of the board, with the grots and a small group of lootas on the right flank, far away from anything else.
My opponent sends the sanguinor to take care of them, seeing a rather soft target in the lootas. On the way he looses one wound, (lootas shooting) before he comes barreling down upon the lootas cutting them down to three poor sods that succsesfully run away two inches from the board edge after taking off a wound from him in close combat. On my turn two they rally (double ones), charging into the sanguinor together with the grots (because why not!), along with 10 grots and a runtherd.
Somehow, the lootas manage to punch away another wound from him, loosing one in return, along with a couple of grots. I loose combat, and fail leadership, but the squighound ate a couple more grots so I passed on the re-roll. My opponents third turn, He wiffed all his attacks, and to finaly add insult to injury, it was the grots that finished him off
The rest off his army was getting shot up something fierce from a battlewagons big shootas, the rest being stuck in reserve. He conceeded because of time after that
Another time the grots got to shine was when they were acting as my SAG bodyguard (19 with one runtherd this time). Their job was to stand around, pick eachothers noses and die to bolter/whirlwind fire from my opponent. Throughout the whole game, the SAG killed a single tactical marine, and four boyz (I got strenght nine three times too ). The grots on the other hand, shot dead two terminators and one wound from Chaplain Cassius, and another termi in overwatch. Good show I'd say My opponent was literly scared to charge them

I have an unpainted Plasmagun marine that has died from 'gets hot' in every game I've ever played... the rest of the squad is painted and I truly believe he will continue to die this way until I paint him.
Anyway - not every model is a great matchup for every opponent/opposing-army. His list might crush a marine player, which in my experience is how most people's lists are generally built (to kill marines).

If I was vain I would list stuff to make me sound good here. I decline. It's just a game after all.

So, my longstrike railhead needs to kill an incoming helturkey to table my opponent, my only other survivng unit having missed completely with missile pods, but landed no less than 6 (of ten) BS1 twin-linked markerlights.
Okay, BS9, ignores cover, this shot to win the match...
Snake eyes.
Turkey goes on to vector strike longstrike in the face, killing him.
Sigh.

I once played a game against a new Tau player when the new codex had just come out.
Every single one of his units failed their Ld checks after taking the 25% casualties from my Ork shooting. Many ran off the board and the rest were swept in combat.
His Riptide kept getting hot. When it was the last unit on the board, I charged it with 3 Meganobz...it killed itself on the overwatch.
I felt so bad after that game. It was the most unlucky rolling that I have ever seen.

I don't know if this is truly underperforming, but I am convinced that every one of my Long Fangs squads has a 50/50 shot at entering every battle completely drunk. Because in most games I've played, one unit (always the same unit) will be an utter failure on the tabletop. Five shots, hitting on 3s? One hit. Need a two to wound? Roll a one. Need to pass a Leadership check on Ld 10 from a Rune Priest? You better believe that's the one time they'll roll an eleven, in spite of passing every psychic test up until that point.

At a 40k doubles tourney a month or so back I had a unit of three Dethrain XV8s shooting at a defiler on turn 1. They got BS4 and Ingores Cover.
12 Shots
*rolls dice*
2 hit
Naturally they continued to be quite useless for the next couple of turns (still won that game though)...

I had a streak of like three games where I had a single Riptide and Ion Cannon Hammerhead in my lists. Every single time I'd boost them to BS6 and would roll 10+ on scatter every single shot, scattering away from anything useful.
Since then I stopped running solo units and run everything in pairs. I don't know why, but when there are two around it's like they are trying to impress and out do each other.

I'm expecting an Imperial Knights supplement dedicated to GW's loyalist apologetics. Codex: White Knights "In the grim dark future, everything is fine."

Not a specific unit, but deepstriking. Every time I deep strike, I roll one and they never come in until the battle's almost over. Never when I need/want them to. So I've stopped deepstriking completely. Never again.

Oh your Fenrisian Wolf are Int 5 because of Canis Wolfborn , ok 3 more wounds... 2 more dead... oh I'm so lucky ... looks like more dice for the melting pot.

I had a hellhound tank that would always roll 1's for dangerous terrain tests, no matter what I drove it over. Aegis wall, little bit of rubble, forest, river.
So I put a dozer blade on it from a Chimera Kit, That lets you re-roll the test.
First game I used it after that, I drove it into an Oasis in the middle of a desert, the only bit of area terrain on the map.
Rolled a 1, of course. But wait, I have a re-roll, Rolled another 1 .
Some Krieg tank crew are still there, wearing nothing but board shorts and their gas masks.
