Odd question, as i'm away from my rulebook and can't check the fine print for myself.
Would a KFF affect a FOR that you have bought for your list? If the KFF mek was inside would you measure from the building section he is occupying, as you would from a vehicle?
You could also apply the same question to the Powerfield generator from DA.

Anything that works on a unit, will not work on terrain.
The fortification is terrain.

Which still does not make it a friendly model

pg 121 says when you deploy fortifications, it sets up the dynamic that they are friendly and enemy models.
If meltas and armor bane work on them then so should the KFF. it is treated like a transport while being shot.

Besides, the KFF has no requirement that you have to be a friendly model to get a cover save. Anyone gets a cover save, whether friend, enemy, frenemy, ally, fortification, or hyper intelligent shade of blue.

Not quite, the requirement is "any unit"
and "friendly vehicle" like a transport.

They are treated as vehicles (transports) for the purposes of shooting. Do vehicles get a cover save from a KFF ?

The KFF arguably works on fortifications.
The DA power Field (thanks to the errata in the DA FAQ) doesn't.

Not being an enemy model (or unit) matters about as much as how you paint it.
.
KFF under the current definition does not work.
It is not ever a "friendly Vehicle" to the Big Mek.
It is a terrain piece (Multi-part Building, fortification, with battlements) purchased as part of your army, but fortifications are not "Friendly models", "Friendly Units" (or any type of unit at all), nor "Friendly vehicles". So while an Occupied fortification may be shot at by the enemy as if it were an enemy vehicle(defaulted to by virtue of being at all targetable), that still does not make it a "Friendly vehicle" at any time to the Big Mek.

And using the precedent of the DA power field, the KFF should not work on a fortification either.

Of course, using that precedent KFF shouldn't radiate from a BW's hull either, which it does Powerfield doesn't, i think?
If that stops working KFF becomes pretty fething futile
I don't overly mind if it doesn't work on a fortification. Just interested in the arguments for and against.

Actually, the KFF doesn't specify that it does radiate from the vehicle's hull in this edition. It did in 5th (the codex didn't address it, but the general rules seemed to allow it and the FAQ said yes)... but in this edition, while the general rules seem to allow it, it hasn't been included in the current Ork FAQ and the DA power field ruling does seem to suggest that GW have changed their minds on fields working from inside a transport this edition.
Then again, given that the power field ruling is yet another in a growing line of 6th edition FAQ rulings that contradict the written rules, it could be nothing more than proof that they should stop asking the janitor to write the FAQs...

Either that or they realised that 4++ invulnerable Landraider walls are a smidge broken
Chances are we'll have an Ork codex soon enough anyway, which may or may not solve the issue...

from the faq it was in the errata to only apply to the unit and not any transports they are embarked in. So that is why it would not affect a building, as it doesn't affect any transports.
The KFF is allowed to affect the transport it is embarked in and any friendly vehicles (transports) .

Main rulebook FAQ
Q: Do embarked passengers with ‘area ofeffect’ wargear, such as
the Big Mek’s Kustom Force Field, measure the range of such items
from the hull of the transport they are embarked upon? (p78)
A: Yes.
Thought it was mentioned somewhere, but was looking in the Ork one.

A bigger question is whether buildings even get cover saves. The rules never mention that you get them. Just because some of the transport rules come over doesn't mean you get all the vehicle rules as well.
I think it's just an oversight on GW's part, but I've had people insist that buildings don't get saves.

You use the rules for shooting at vehicles when firing at buildings, presumably this includes basic cover save rules.
