can someone help me understand why dakka is now all of a sudden uploading images sideways? there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why its happening. Ill upload 5 of the same picture and "maybe" 1 of the 5 will be the right way up. Its really fkn irritating to be perfectly honest. These are iphone photos by the way. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's why.

Your iPhone figures out for itself which way up the photos are supposed to be, and re-orients them on your phone to be the right way up. But, as I understand it, the image file includes a bit of code that signifies which way up the picture was taken, and that's the way the photo will upload.

The way around it is to (before you upload them) open the pic in an image editor (not sure if the iPhone has one built in, my Android phone does) and then save it. No need to actually edit it... Re-saving the image changes the code to re-assign the 'up' orientation.

THe photos were taken with the iphone held vertically as normal. i made sure of that. and why is it that this happens only some of the time? ALL of my hundreds of photos have been taken with an iphone, ive never experienced this issue until now. And again, i can upload 5 of the same picture and 1 sometimes 2 will end up being correct.

After a little more digging, there looks to be an on-again off-again glitch with iphones and how they process vertical images. Pops up on some phones and not others. Either way, it's an iPhone issue, not a Dakka issue.

The 'fix' appears to be to take photos with your phone held sideways, as that's what most image software treats as 'upright'.. Even the iPhone sets landscape as 'upright' and adds extra code to display the image correctly on the iPhone... but this doesn't always carry across when you upload the image to something else.

Funny enough this happened to me recently on my droid, never happened before now. I've messaged the kid about it but haven't heard back yet. Might be worth looking into if it happens again since it's not something that has been an issue before for droid. I resolved it myself by cropping the image which saved a new photo circumventing the original format. I think uploading to your computer and saving back to your phone would also work but it's a lot of faffing for a fix. Ideally the upload section would have a rotate function but that's no doubt on Lego's mega list already.
