Check the Assault Marines entry in your codex.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Excerpt from "Seeress of Kell", Book Five of The Malloreon series by David Eddings.

And not just for the "Dakka is not a substitute for your codex" reason. Different chapters have different rules. I know the number for DA is not the same as C:SM, not sure about BA.

But the question should not be "Can" but "Should" to which the answer is "None": take flamers instead. Plasma pistols are overpriced across the board.

I've really only got what's on the sprue to work with sadly, Also what CC Loadout should the captain take?

Are you speaking about the sergeant of the squad or the captain you want to take as HQ?

Both can take a pretty wide palette of upgrades but most of the time less is more. Especially the sergeants as they only have one wound can't make their points back if you load them with upgrades.
A plain Power Weapon will do the job most of the times and is not that expensive, or you could consider Meltabombs if you want to go tank hunting with Meltaguns (I assume you want to play Blood Angels ).
For the Captain it's ok to spend some more points (You should still not overdo it tough), a loadout I like is Jumppack, Power Fist and Stormshield.

Playing mostly Necromunda and Battletech, Malifaux is awesome too!

First, what army you playing? It looks (from your rank track/avatar) that you are going for Blood Angels. In which case you need to take everything I say with a grain of salt, as I'm a vanilla codex Ultramarine player. The last BA codex I owned was back in 3rd, and the lsat time I seriously fielded the boys in red was in RT/2nd.

Second, never look a a unit or a HQ in a vacuum. Always look at them as parts of an overall army, working together.

If you need bits/options not on the sprue, there are a number of ways to get them. Some you can pick up in other kits, or you can trade/buy them from other guys/3rd party manufactures. Flamers are something that tends to build up in bits boxes, as you get them in a lot of kits, and often want melta/plasma instead.

If you want to pay the points for a CC combat monster captain, going with a power fist/lightning claw combo covers all your bases. For less points, you could go with either a relic blade, or an axe/sword combo. There are a lot of variables, so it's hard to say what is "best".

Sorry, I did indeed mean the Seargent, But the captain advice is great too!

It also helps if the OP reads forum rules before posting too, but no harm done aye?

Star Trek taught me so much. Like, how you should accept people, whether they be black, white, Klingon or even female...
