Hey Dakka,
After looking through IA 12, I really like the Angels Revenant and some of their fluff, and would like to expand on it. I have some ideas, and could use some feedback on the plausibility of the ideas, as in, would you write these off as stupid if they were actually in IA 12? I was thinking along the following lines.

  • After the loss of their home world, they are fleet based

  • The surviving marines out on crusade at the time of their fortress monestary's demise defended a Mechanicus forge world, and the battle concluded just as news of the loss of the rest of their chapter reached them. The Ad Mech, grateful for the help of the Angels Revenant, granted the survivors technology/knowledge to increase the success rate of turning adult males into marines (if the SW can do it, the ad mech probably knows how to as well, right?). Now, the Angels Revenant can draw upon recruits from all ages with equal success, increasing the speed that they can rebuild. The chapter is still on good terms with the Ad Mech.

  • The chapter used to be close to the Ecclisiarchy, but has distanced themselves from them as of late. Following the destruction of their home world, the surviving marines re-studied the teachings of the Emperor and Guilliman, and, while still venerating the Emperor, came to the conclusion that they had been going about worship the wrong way, and had been punished for it. Thus, they still cling to the belief that the Emperor is divine, but choose to reject most of the Imperial Creed; instead, their beliefs are more in line with other chapters.

  • I'm by no means done with this, and these are just preliminary results, but it's what I have so far. Apologies for any mistakes, its late and I've been working all day. Anyways, thanks for reading.

Maybe and increased success chance rather than equal success...
You could always say that the marines, having to fight desperate battles and make hard choices, during their rebuilding have become slightly jaded in regard to the Imperial Creed.

Ah, good points on both counts. That would make more sense/be more interesting, as it would be less of an "easy button" type of thing; it would still be risky, but with enough chance of success that it wouldn't be seen as a waste of gene-seed to attempt it. And I like your take on the reasons for their view shifts-beliefs would probably take a little more than just one event alone to be adjusted.
