My guess is that this would increase processing time undesirably, but is there any thought to allowing people to increase or otherwise customize the posts loaded per page?

At first I thought this was related to a stat that someone could look at a thread and see how many times per page you post on average .

No, I mean like the ability to customize pagination, so instead of making it 30 posts per page, you could make it 60 or whatever.

Blog view does that to some extent; although if you wanted to read ALL the posts, that would make it more of a pain...

I know, after I read it I was like, "oh show posts per page", yeah that makes more sense .
I wouldn't mind an option like this, but as it stands for me personally, 30 posts per page is enough

I'd appreciate some kind of 9gag-ish scrolling aka you automatically see the next 20 posts when you scroll down far enough. But alas, that's quite over the top I guess.

The caching mechanism requires it to be in chunks of 30.
The auto-scrolling forum page (like facebook/9gag) is something that is feasible to implement, but I'm personally not a fan of it as I tend to drag and hold the scrollbar. I'm not opposed to adding it but it would certainly have an 'off' switch.

I just checked out 9gag to see what you mean, and that IS pretty neat.

I assumed that would be resource intensive.

Not at all if you load a page at a time, you just load it exactly as it is loaded now, but pull it in via javascript instead of loading a whole new page. It is actually marginally less intensive than clicking to load the full next page.

Call me old fashioned, but I really like having pages with a set number of posts rather than a "constantly scrolling stream". It helps me get a feel for how much I've read through a thread.
And there's always that little feeling of excitement when you get the first post on a new page...
