I spent about a month painting a FW Mk IV venerable dread for the Mrs. army in prep for a tournament the following month. I'd completely finished it and had started to take some photos to show off on the interwebs. Something came up and I left the dread to have his photoshoot postponed to the day after.

Returning from work the next day I discovered to my horror that my 20ish week only puppy had got into my painting/modelling/general stuff room and had completely dismembered the dread and left him in little bits all over the house. Not a single part was salvageable (I still have the pics somewhere).

Gutted is not even close to how I felt.

Do not lose your friendship with this person - who hooked you up with a place to stay, probably a lot cheaper than renting with a stranger - over a piddly $70.00 loss. Are you mad, man?! I empathize but your priorities are way messed up in this situation.

The monoliths melted? That's pretty unlikely. What's the melting point of plastic?

I, uh, think you missed the rest of the post...the models are just the latest in a long line of crap I've had to deal with while staying with this person.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I haven't had anything significant happen to me yet but...

One of my friends spent around a week painting a beast men ghorgon. Shortly after he sold it and his army on ebay. A few weeks later he went to gamesday and saw a very suspicious looking ghorgon, which one a prize.

Another guy i know had a case with around 3k O&G in it in the attic which his dad threw out by mistake! His dad offered to reimburse him but he wouldn't tell his dad the price to save him from having a fit.

My old bitz box was thrown out by my mom once. She had no idea what all the plastic crap was and everything looked broken so she tossed the box out when cleaning the basement.

I couldn't rage at her because her reasoning was sound - everything is in pieces and shards and whatnot - I just explained that from now on, she is not to touch the newly labeled 'bitz box' despite everything in there looking broken and shattered. Then I whimpered to myself as I started to rebuild using sprues from some new kits I just grabbed. :(

I don't think that's unlikely at all (unless you're being super pedantic about the meaning of the word "melt"?). Styrene melts at 494F, but starts to warp as early as 170F, and I it's not hard to reach that temperature in a parked vehicle on a hot day, especially in someplace like Arizona; where people bake cookies inside their cars.

In my anecdotal experience, I used to work at a video store, and I had someone attempt to return a pile of black slag and ribbon that used to be a videotape, and my sister left some water bottle in her backseat that looked like an ant after a magnifying glass.

Warp? Sure. Melt, not so much. At those temperatures, paper would be combusting in the car and I find that really unlikely.

I thought this was strange:

Put together a Valkyrie and had the windows off so I could paint the inside.
Lost one.
Could not figure out where it went for couple months.
Actually got upset because I could not figure out a good way to replace it.
Was horrified I was actually upset about a piece of a model missing.
[happy ending] Pretended it never happened after I found the piece in the bottom of the cabinet (back corner covered in dust bunnies).

4 year old son got hold of metal Abbadon model all done, nicely based and painted: to this day he says (grumble) he does not know where it is (7yrs old now).
I bet he brought it outside and the squirrels got it... evil furry fiends.

So yeah, super needlessly pedantic then.

Yes, I was being pedantic, although not needlessly. Mostly because, as cool as it sounds when you tell the story, there's a vast difference between warping and melting.

For all purposes of telling the story, the difference is absolutely pointless, since it does not change the emotional and anecdotal impact.

Needlessly pedantic, and wrong into the bargain.

If the plastic is hot enough to warp from its own weight then it has returned to a plastic state - in short 'melted' Not an extreme case, but the plastic has become soft. One definition of 'melt' is 'to become softened'.

What it did not do was liquify - which as an extreme example of melting.

He did not claim that the monoliths had liquified, merely that they had melted.

And his definition is the correct one in this instance.

The Auld Grump, you wants pedantry? I gots it by da bushel basket.

We had an Apocalypse game at our local gaming store a few years ago . We had advertised it and had a large turn out from several states. It was called 40K at 40K a side. We actually would up at 43K a side. It was huge. There was even two titans....

There were like 10 to 12 tables put together and my collection of Valkyries/ Vultures was not as large as it is now but I remember one or two vultures and 12 Valkyries because I had 12 squads of metal Storm Troopers on them.

It was a long day and night and when my last unit was killed off I packed my stuff, said my goodbys and went home.

I took my stuff out of the car the day after but did not count everything. A week later I realized I had left my box of Stormies in the shop.

They were long gone....

12 Squads of metal Storm Troopers....

I watched eBay for months and never saw them...

If I was vain I would list stuff to make me sound good here. I decline. It's just a game after all.

House Rule -A common use of the term is to signify a deviation of game play from the official rules.

Almost 2 years ago I lost 3 new unassembled FW malanthropes< i looked everywhere for them. They went missing in my locked, squirrel proof game room. Last month all three re-emerged from the warp in my primary bits box, still in the bags. I have been in the bits tray repeatedly over the last 2 years, then poof here they are.

I was dipping minis in the backyard at night once. Anyone not familiar with this, it involves sticking the mini on the end of a stick, dipping it in the stain, then spinning the stick really fast to get excess off.

I had a unit of 20 Black Orcs. Being the time constrained idiot I am, after spinning the first couple without a flaw, one flung off the end of the stick into the night. I thought no worries, ill find him in the morning and kept going. At the end of the 20 Orks I was missing 4 that had flung into the darkness (including the musician), come the next day I couldn't find any of them and I spent a good hour looking.

End of story - I now have a unit of 16 Black Orcs minus the Muso haha.

They rode Squirrels to their freedom......

I have had several models disappear and reappear months later. I think space time bends around my collection......

I do have a really good one involving a Transformer toy. I have a shelf with very collectable Transformers on it. One day i bumped the shelf and one fell off the shelf. I freaked cause these are not you run of the mill 13 dollar transformers you get in the toy aisle at Walmart. The come from a Transformer fan convention held every year. These guys are worth some cash. Anyways one fell and I flipped out. I snagged him up to make sure he wasn't broken. Thank good he wasn't. However his missile launcher was missing. There was a bag of trash from cleaning the room, two laundry hampers, and 2 boxes near where it fell. I searched through EVERYTHING. Could not find it at all. I freaked to the point i called the company that hosts the convention to see if I could get a replacement. They said as another convention was coming up it could take a few months before they could check they spare parts for one. Well the months go by and then my wife walks in and ask if I was looking for this.... It was the missile launcher. Turns out she found it in the laundry hamper we keep towels in. I still do not believe it as we must have done 6 to 10 loads of towels in the few months that passed and I know I went through the basket twice the day it fell. I called the company back and let them know, They said they where about to mail out the piece....... Odd how that happens........ Warp powered space squirrels strike again......

EDIT:All typos are also the work of the evil squirrel empire.

I dunno where you live, but out here in CA the interior of your car gets to temperatures to completely warp plastic figures. Not melt into a pool of plastic, but to make them nearly unusable.

Oh God I'm seeing the start of a new meme forming here...

Don't recall losing any of my own minis, just some dice. One of my brothers lost his Space Marine Commander that he'd built with the commander and veterans box at my cousin's house. We searched everywhere and couldn't find it. The loss left him pretty bummed out about 40k and is basically the reason why he quit...
