The best thing about black gravel is that after a couple of drybrushes it can be whatever colour you want in less than 30 seconds per base at a later date.

I can't see it being a problem at all. I based my Necrons like this and no one has laughed, if they did they did it in private! Basically(no pun), if its the theme you like go for it; there are no rules saying that you must have artists' quality bases on all your models. Do it!
