I bought a Steel Phalanx army a few months ago and played a couple games with them to learn the rules and decide what I want to use. So far I learned Enomotarchos is more complicated then it seems and I have no idea what I'm doing with Phoenix.

This is my starting list for a local league running on YAMS so no worries about specialists or hacking objectives. I tried it out this weekend against Tohaa and was mostly happy with it, except Ajax failing his first three saves and Machaon finishing him off.

This looks decent although different from what a mate of mine runs - I don't think you need 2 agemas - 1 will be enough.

Also, Ajax cannot form an Enomotarchos with Machaon and 2 Myrmidons AFAIK, it has to be 1 hero + 3 bodybags.

Another thing you played wrong is Ajax - he does have 3 wounds if you count V:NWI but if he loses 3 wounds he passes directly to the DEAD state, so Machaon would not be able to fix him after he failed 3 saves. V:NWI makes the Unconscious state like an extra wound.

That said, I suggest trying out a Thorekitai link with Nessaie Alke and some Netrods/Remotes for cheap orders. That would require you to go 2 Combat Groups, though.

He can. Officer or Named Officer + 2-3 Myrmidons or Officers or named Officers form an enomotarchos

Yup. NWI is like an extra wound that replaces "Unconscious" state. No much use to fix Myrmidons, because of that. They can be healed when at 0 wounds as they are technically Unconscious, but if you fail they die. Because of amputation of wrong limbs. PanO Angel of Death style.

Word. Thorakitai support link is nasty. As long as you don't get the leader and Alke killed the link stays. With 360 visor and SS2 the link will never be surprised. Grab either a rocket or a second spitfire and a forward observer for flash pulse and the link is good. Also the only engineer for Specialist missions.

The Thorakitai can also be an offensive link. Just be careful not to lose the linkleader and Alke at the same time. Without Alke you won't be able to remake the link.

The doctor dude is pretty much useless to ASS because of NWI. You don't want to start killing your own dudes with bad rolls. Let the enemy do it . If you had Thorakitai Machaon would be more useful. But then again why fix them when you can beat face.

You should try Eudoros. The dude is extra nasty in a link. Sure, BS is lower than that of a Spitfire, but DAM 15 more than compensates. Also EXP CCW.

No you just need a Hero or Officer with Enomotarchos to form a link, the link could be all heros if you want. I like Ajax with Eudoros, for when Ajax dies the like stays thanks to Number 2.

This. The Alpha A team is total PITA to deal with.

Ok, I'm definitely going to try a few games with Eudoros instead of Machaon. I'll probably get around to trying a Thorakitai link whenever I get bored of two myrmidon links or Alke's model is released, whichever comes first.

I bought Phoenix because the 3 fire pie plates are neat. I just don't know what he is supposed to do in the army.

Park in a tall building and shoot?
Spearhead assaults?
Find a nice spot in the middle of the table and provide fire support?

The range modifier and ODD make me want to hang back but it seems like a waste to leave 3 myrmidons chilling with him.
