Gents, question, I have two friends whom last night, I played a a 2v1 match against, at 3k points. The battle was a 2 turns in, and my buddies are both raving about how unfair the battle was and how I was winning. I tried to assure them the game was rather close (it was 1 point in my favor at games end) but I could not get them to relax at all. I offered advice and didn't take an optimized list, but they insisted on nitpicking on rules to try and find an advantage.
I understand they were less experienced in the game, but this seems to be a trend with them.
Does anyone out there just have someone they play with who is like that? How do you handle it? I'd rather not have to avoid them to play 40k if I can avoid it. :/

There is a gamer in my group that goes crazy when bad die rolls happen, his units are destroyed, or the opponent makes their saving rolls.
We have all just started to take it in stride laugh about it and just know the type of player he is. Some people refuse to play with him, others play with him knowing it will be a headache but at least it gives him the chance at games.

2v1 Matches, 1v1v1 matches, and any matches in general that require house rules, are already headaches a lot of the time. This is especially true when playing with/against poor sports. I played one once and the guy on my side did nothing all game except function as a body shield. I had to keep calling him back to our table to remind him to move or do things. I still pulled out a tie, but it was a headache. It also conuffudles deployment and a lot of army-wide rules, and I've never seen the 2 player side win simply because you are twice as likely to have a bad player on that side and they often forget to communicate exactly what they are planning.
So I'd recommend avoiding those. Aside from that, try talking to then about it.

I did talk to them about it, they sorta acknowledged it. They have that syndrome where they get really attached to thei rifles, and casualties take some kind of real toll on them? They get frustrated by casualties, even if they are rolling normally.
I've had mixed success with 2v1s, but it happens in 1v1 as well

As your cat avatar would say.
Deal with it
If your friends cant handle a casual fun game without whining then there is really not much you can do.
I find though that with just about any game casual or competitive, nothing the cuts the edge faster than big noises and big actions with a crowd.
then making silly stories when things go right or wrong.

Once played an Apoc game (old rules) with my Main force with Orks with some help from my CSM Vs. Necrons and Tau (all the latest codex at time of writing, I also have a BatRep on this battle as well if anyone's interested). Turn 1 which my opponent had basically turned my Skullhammer battle fortress to 3HP and my Stompa to 2HP, proceeded to destroy my vindicator and reduce my LR to 1HP, a very good round of shooting. My Turn 1 and with my already weakened LR I manage to Glance his monolith, I then fire my BW with Lifta-Droppa and glance him 3 times on his monolith, resulting in a wreck of the monolith, my friend then has a massive argument with me and whines about how the Lifta-Droppa wagon is OP, and how he will never play against it again. This infuriated me a lot because that was the only tank he lost that turn nothing was weakened that much and he was pretty much still had his whole army since the only thing that died was his monolith, and considering how my super heavy's were weakened so much, (and how weak Orks are mech-wise, since it is a 4th ed. codex) I got really upset with my opponent, but I did not call him out in the whole argument. This is the only reason why I really have been put off Apoc as well, Apoc is meant to be for a fun time, that game was not. Since then I have let my opponent use proxy FW units and I have never had a problem with it, so why should my opponent have a problem when I use that unit? its because he was being a jerk about it. My advice to you is next time just call them out on their attitude on the match and tell them that they are making the game unfun for you, Im sure if you tell them to get their act together they will change, if not don't play them again if they ask just say your reasons bluntly, as have said before. They will either change or leave, do what I did not as Im sure it will have a better outcome .

It happens, if someone is just getting into the game.. I'll give them a break... talk to them after the game... try to detach them from the units.
Some of it depends on the armies they play. well, could just be their lists. If your running those super expensive units and they get knocked off, it hurts the soul.. If you lose a large handful of fodder models you likely don't even bat an eye.

Completely the same situation at my FLGS. Some play against him and others don't, but we all talk about it (some laugh, others frown). The bad days where some cheating and/or rules arguing (he is usually always wrong) leaves people with bad tastes in their mouths.

Had one poor sport, but he mellowed out (it was his first game).
2 vs 1, a detachment of Black Templars (me) and his.. few units of guardsmen vs a friend with a host of 'Nids. I told him from the get-go that his Guard will likely not survive the enounter, and that we would more then likely lose - too few troops, no real support but for my Templars. Also, I had a Land Raider, a Dready, and a Destroyer Predator. In the end, it came down to the wire and we got close, but we lost (the 'Nid player is a bit of a power gamer as well. Carnifiex, Trigon, and 10 or so warriors and a metric drokton of genestealers and gaunts.) He swore he was gonna give up the hobby, but I talked with him about it. My words were "Well, look at it this way boss - You have guard. They die. In the worlds of Warhammer 40k, millions of 'em die each day. It's what they do. Sometimes, the dice roll unfavorably - but hey, it's part of the game. Their strength is in their NUMBERS, and their cavalry. Next game, bring a few tanks, and get a platoon of Karskins. Get some heroes, as well. Trust me on this."
Next game, we wiped the 'nids off the table. I let my Land Raider Crusader and Predator "counts as" 2 Leman Russ tanks. It was wholesale slaughter. He got lucky with his rolls and pieplates and obliterated models. His infantry got eaten (like I told him they would), but I ended up bringing my Templars down on what remained of the nids that didnt get blowed up.

One of them got me into the hobby to start. Since then his record has been poor since he doesn't have many chances to play, and I was going to tournaments and upping my level of play for two years.
I think if they played more, they'd fare better, I may try and go very easy to get them more gun-ho about it, and swallow my pride a bit. :/

It sounds like every other game at most tournaments I've been to.
Tell them their behavior lessens your enjoyment of the game, and if this doesn't help, find new opponents.

You don't need to say anything more than this.
People who like to argue but are incapable of abstract thought aren't worth arguing with. Just ignore them until they prove capable of being useful human beings, or at least drop the bad attitude so you can enjoy a game with them.

"It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who gives us the freedom to demonstrate.

Nah...no brick, these guys are really cool outside of the game.
Yeah, i had first turn, i let them each try and seize for fun too.
Part of the nitpickyness was not being too familiar with the rules, they needed some clarification was all i guess.

No no brick.. use the BRB it hurts more ..
seriously thou
As to rules sit down with each of them one on one with their armies to help them optimize them a bit . go over the rules so they arnt wasting points on useless things (every army has them)
Play against them but never ever never just let them win. Make them earn it ..It will strengthen the friendship in the long run and keep them from becoming TFG. or WAAC..or just losing interest in general.

See that is the problem of 3k point games . You start and your turn takes a long time , while by long I dont meen actualy long , but hot it feels to the opposing players. They just stand there rolling saves or cover , watching you move and doing nothing . Then their turn starts and nothing awesome happens . They don't blow up your army sky high , there is no awesome shifts . There is as you said it "balance" after turn 2. That is for many people unfun and boring . Standing around for 50 min and still having a tie or a narrow victory on your opponent side may feel like wasted time for some . Specialy when on a subconscious , humans feel that 2 should be better then one . Even if w40k it is not the case and two 1500 armies are not the same as a 3kpoints one build from ground up to be a 3k points army..
IMO shouldn't play big games like that with your friends . It is clearly not their thing and I just hope you didn't play some sort of horror army with 200 models to move per turn .
Confirmed for enormous douchebag. Lifta Droppa is awesome, one of the coolest units in the game

our FLGS has two, one that gives up on turn two more often than not complaining about stuff, and the other does the exact same. Both also pull this elitism about themselves and their army. the only difference is one rules lawyers without a rulebook, and then another just thinks throwing money at stuff means he gets better games in.
