Hi everyone!

I collected a sizeable Lizardman army about 13 years ago and like many stopped... but after a recent nostalgic trip to Games Workshop I'm back and I'm ready to give Warhammer 40K a go! I've decided to collect Grey Knights, so any advice people can give to an absolute beginner would be extremely appreciated!

I may also be moving to Shanghai in China soon (delighted to hear the one shop over there is in Shanghai), so if anyone knows much about the Warhammer scene over there that would be useful too!

Cheers!

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

Welcome to dakka

My advise to start if is take coteaz, only 100 points and very versatile, and a couple of boxes of pagks.

That would be a good core to paint up, then maybe at some termies as a second troops choice, maybe a dreadknight after that.

Good luck

Well to be honest i dont know the scene in china either I am currently on holiday in china, I am going to shanghai in 3 days, I tried to find a GW shop there last time i was there but I was not near the city center I was near the coast. I think there is one in the city center but its a big city, very big city. It depends on where you live.

IF you want to drive from one end of shanghai to the other side it might take 5-6 hours. Even if you live in the centre of shanghai it will be a long drive or walk depends on where you live.

Welcome to dakka., and also China!

I live in China but not in Shanghai, however I did visit the store there when on holiday 2 weeks ago and also my friend in Beijing who plays.

So I can confirm that the shop in shanghai is open and you'll be able to find players there. And also that Shanghai and Beijing do have gaming clubs, albeit quite small ones.
The guys in the shop speak perfect English which is nice. I haven't tried to play vs any Chinese guys, the language barrier is fairly challenging already, without trying to argue about things like plasma cannons or wound allocation.

Whilst you are over here you may want to check out the fake warhammer you can get on taobao (Chinese Ebay, will save you so much money.)

I do believe your not allowed to openly talk about counterfeit warhammer related stuff on dakka, so pls remove that.

Thank you guys for all your advice and tips!

I currently have a basic strike squad and will prob do as you recommended and get myself some terminators and Coteaz next!

As for China, will definitely need to check out the Shanghai branches and it's good to hear they speak good English as my Chinese at the moment does not go much beyond 'hello!'

Does anyone know what the price of the paints and models are like over there - cheaper or more expensive than UK?

In the shop prices are identical.

As I said above, Chinese Ebay is a good source of cheap models, though you'll need a Chinese friend to do it for you.

Games Workshop paints are standard price pretty much everywhere.

Hello from Guangdong!

I have seen more and more little China flags popping up on Dakka. I think we should do a game meet!
