There is only one Chapter with the name Blood Angels and bearing its heraldry, "currently" led by Chapter Master Dante. The BA do have several Successor Chapters, however, amongst them the doomed Flesh Tearers and, if rumours are to be believed, the Blood Ravens.
I think their latest Codex actually has a page dedicated to some if not all the Blood Angels' successors. You should check it out!

Blood Ravens are absolutely not Blood Angels.
They are most likely a 1K Sons successor chapter that was lost before the Rubric.
There are a number of successors to the BA including the Flesh Tearers (who may or may not eat their victoms), Lamenters (refounded over 20 times), Knights of Blood, and Angels Encarmine.

*shrug* I'm not going to discuss that, I'm just saying the 5E BA Codex names them and suggests a connection.

There are at least as many rumours on them being Blood Angels successors as there are Thousand Sons rumours.
Neither is clear cut, and you can easily get away with either interpretation (or, as it were, with Blood Ravens simply being an Ultramarines successor like most others).

The BLBs push them more towards 1k sons. I think a lot of the BA connection comes from the word Blood and the fact they are also red.

And WD #305 says they were created in M36-M37 ... so unless the Imperium deliberately used the geneseed of Traitor Marines to make them ...
I'm not sure where the Thousand Sons bit comes from, though. The article goes into a bit of speculation regarding the Blood Ravens' origin, but the only Chapters it suggests as potential parents are the Blood Angels, the Raven Guard, and the Dark Angels.
Although the White Dwarf is, of course, only one source of fluff amongst many, and this being 40k, there is no "wrong" theory.

If anything, the BLBs push them towards being Imperial Fist.. because the chapter guards one of Rogal Dorn's weapons. Yet another contender
If you think the Thousand Son theory is the most plausible, more power to you. But the whole point of them being all ambiguous about their origins is that .. well .. it's ambiguous. Blood Angels is as good as shot as Thousand Sons, even (especially) if it's not the one you would pick for "your" Blood Ravens.

I never said it was fact. Odds are that because of all the conflicting fluff the Blood Ravens could easily come from several different chapters. However they do not suffer red thirst so that makes the connection to BA tenuious at best. Also remember that most of their history is lost, M36-M37 was the refounding IIRC.

Well, they don't suffer the Rubic of Ahriman either, or the pre-Rubic mutations, do they? If you hold their lack of Red Thirst against them to not be Blood Angels, you should weight the arguments against them being TS by the same measure, no?
Got to avoid double standards. If you think it is possible (even plausible) to have a loyalist TS-successor that escaped the fate of the TS, it is equally likely to have a Blood Angles successor that escaped the fate of the Blood Angels.
If you think it is "tenuous at best" that a BA-successor could escape the thirst, it is also "tenuous at best" that a TS-successor could escape the fall to Chaos / Rubic of Ahriman, no?

Well in my previous post, had you read it, I mentioned that they were lost prior to the rubric, now depending on how early the seperated from the 1k sons it is very possible they left before the mutation begain as well.

Going solely by GW fluff ...
"The majority of the records on the Chapter date back no further than early M37, though references to their service in the litanies of other Chapters and Imperial Organisations prove that the Chapter existed and fought the enemies of the Emperor for centuries before this. This gap in the Blood Ravens history has led to endless speculation as to the exact origin of the Chapter, and what could have happened to expunge such a large and important portion of their history from their lore."
- WD #305
No "refounding" is mentioned in the article, it's just that nobody (or next to nobody; those who may have access apparently don't want to share) knows what the Chapter did between their first appearance in the records in mid-late M36, and later history in M37.
Zweischneid wrote:But the whole point of them being all ambiguous about their origins is that .. well .. it's ambiguous.
This!
It's just like with the Lost Legions, or the legends of the Horus Heresy. Although some novels have obviously begun to tell of the latter by now - not that it should be taken for gospel.

To be fair, what exactly is it that lets you believe so firmly in them descending from the 1k Sons? "They have lots of Psykers"?
I'd hazard a guess this depends more on their homeworld than the geneseed ..

Maybe they separated from the Blood Angels before the Thirst?

Or maybe they have it and it's just not mentioned/known.
There are many, many interpretations one could take here.

Not likely given that the thirst occured at the primarchs death and wasn't a localized event. Every SM bearing the gene seed of Sanguinius was affected. So unless they lost the gene seed of Sanguinius they should have it.

Exactly. Automatically Appended Next Post: Imperial Deceit wrote:Not likely given that the thirst occured at the primarchs death and wasn't a localized event. Every SM bearing the gene seed of Sanguinius was affected. So unless they lost the gene seed of Sanguinius they should have it.
Neither was the Rubic of Ahriman a localized event. It affected the entire Legion, including those not currently on the Planet of the Sorcerers.
Why should a break-away faction have been spared?
