Hi here's my idea for a 500 point dark angels army:

Librarian

Tactical Squad (Plasma Gun, Plasma Cannon)

Scout Squad (Missile Launcher, 4x Sniper, CamoCloaks)

Devastator Squad (4x Missile Launcher)

What do you think? It's around 500 points I believe...
Then I was thinking of just doubling the army to get 1000 points... (The final Army)

For 500 points, everything in there seems solid, espcially as marines are pretty limited at that level. The only things I would add/change at 500 is to upgrade a ML to a lascannon in the devs, as even at 500 points, you can still face AV13 (necron vehicles with shields) or AV14 (guard can just about get a Leman in 500 points). This is not likely, but there are people who would do this, and you want some insurance against that.

As for expanding the army, I would suggest another Tactical squad, possibly geared more to AT (lascannon and melta combat squads, MB on the sgt), and a Lascannon predator, again for better AV13-14 killing. Whirlwinds are also a steal in the DA codex at 65 points, and provide good anti-horde and can ignore cover at the expense of strength.

The key with marines of any kind at 1000 points is to try and have a squad for as many roles as possible, so one for AT (lascannon/melta), one for anti-MEQ (plasma), one for anti-horde (flamer, HB) ect.

Also, if you are not planning on using Deathwing or Ravenwing, have you considered using the new SM codex due next month, as everything will be priced roughly the same, but is shaping up to get some really cool chapter tacticas (rereoll all hits with tac squads, for one). It seems to be that without using the DW or RW, you are almost wasting the potential of the DA codex, and would get more out of SM. The only real loss is divinaton for the libby, but on the whole, C:SM seems better for tis kind of list.

Thanks very much, that was really helpful.

I've been looking around for a very long tim trying to settle on a chapter. I was thinking codex marines (ultramarines) because they are told to be easy to paint (and they should look good on the table top) but a friend also said dark angels are easy to paint....

DA have the stubborn rule which seems really good... So yeah I'm not sure about that tbh...

I think I would include death wing in the army somewhere... Maybe belial with 5 termis as a "hq squad"...?

Thanks

To be honest, Ultras or DA are both solid choices, but as I say, there's nothing to stop you using both codexes in time. I frequently run BA, DA, IF and UM in the same army under the main marine codex, and have never encountered anyone with a problem with this.

Stubborn is good, but the SM codex is getting some chapter tactics that are possibly more useful, like rerolls when shooting for ultras or better flamers/meltas for Salamanders. Also, due to the fact they cannot be swept after combat, Stubborn is potentially a weakness, as if you fall back, you will lose nothing, and possibly get out of comabt and shoot the enemy up.

If you want DW to feature in the army, but not be the core, there are two options I find effective mixed with Greenwing. The first is a unit of DW knights, DSing in and whacking their way through enemies, before reaching a big MC or vehicle and smiting it in epic style. This is more of a one-trick unit, and the other option is more general-purpose: a mid to large squad of DWT, DSing turn one and making maximum use of Twin-linking and split-fire to blast apart an infantry squad (massed SB fire) and a tank (AC or CML). I would not recommend Belial unless DW will be the core of the army, And a DW command squad are also better suited to a pure or mostly DW army. The two options above are the best as a compliment to the army.

Outflanking RW bikers with a couple of meltas or plasmas can cause problems for the enemy as well, and are dirt-cheap on Ebay as well thanks to Dark Vengence. In fact, I would reccommend looking for a DA army from Dark Vengence on ebay, they go for around £25 and give you a libby and company master (always useful to have more HQs), another Tac squad (again, always good), and a squad of DW and RW to play around with and decide if you like them. If not, you can stick them back on ebay and make some of your money back!
