I'm looking to get into FoW as I've always loved WW2 era history. I have my heart set on starting a hungarian army and was planning on using the Grey Wolf book to build a hungarian 2nd armoured list. The following army comes just shy of 1500 pts - I'm hopping that I used the FoC properly.

HQ

185 1x panther A

Combat platoons

2x panther A
2x tiger I E
3x panzer IV H
3x panzer IV H

Would something along the lines of the list above be a decent place to start? I hear tanks are good to start out with as a newer player.

Any feedback or shared experience is welcome!

If I was doing Hungarians I'd go for the assault gun list - you get the unique Hungarian tank the Zrinyi which has a breakthrough gun for easily killing dug in infantry

As currently your list is really just a German list with nothing making it Hungarian

My 1500 list would be
1 hq Zrinyi
3 platoons of 3 Zrinyi(2 with schutzen - all great vs infantry)
3 panthers (allied German good anti tank)
3 toldi armoured cars (recon)
3 rocket launchers (smoke/pinning)

If I was to then go to 1750 I'd add a full strength pioneer platoon and down grade the Toldi to another cheaper option

While I agree Zrinyi's are good, you will struggle if you take a whole army of them. They just can't shift anything thats not infantry.

They are Tanks not armoured cars, I bring this up as it makes them a lot better.

I disagree here, the Hungarians while being Germans without the special rules are a lot cheaper than the Germans, thats their biggest strength.

Back to the list, I would drop the Panzer IV's for one platoon of Zrinyi's and some recon. You will want the Hungarian Motor Heavy Artillery (149mm) over the Nebs are they are Veteran (better for pinning) and are stupidly cheap for AT 5 FP 2+ artillery.

The list I did run and had some good success was:-

HQ Panther + Ervin Tarczay

2 Panthers
2 Panthers
3 Toldi II (recon to stop ambushes and then work with the Zrínyi II's lift Gone To Ground and dig out infantry)
3 Zrínyi II (just for the breakthrough Gun)
Full Motor Infantry + Panzerfaust (I always tried to get Pioneers but I never had the points)
4 149mm 14/31M howitzer (Point for point the second best artillery int he game)

thats 1750pts

You can drop Tarczay to get the Tigers if you like and then up the Toldi II's this option also gives you a good assault option.

Hope this helps

Ben

I'd disagree mainly as allied infantry or allied infantry + TD's seems so popular, 3 panthers should be able to deal with jumbos etc.

The artillery is very points efficient though

I'm not taking about TD's and Jumbos. The assault guns can't take on Panzer IV's or Shermans thats the biggest problem I had with my Hungarians. TD's will do what they do no matter what they face it's the medium tanks that ruin the Assault Guns days and thats would is more common these days.

Having learnt to play the game with Hungarians I found the Tank company far easier to use that the assault guns. The Assault guns are a subtle list and so not a good starting list. Also int he first post gossipmeng said he wanted to do the 2nd Armoured Division for historical reasons. The Assault guns weren't part of the Armoured Divisions, they were part of independent brigades and so you have completely missed what gossipmeng was asking for,

Thanks for the feedback guys I'm still leaning towards the tank heavy army - perhaps once I get more experience I can consider an assault gun force.

I've always loved panthers which makes the list Grey Hunter suggested quite appealing.

Are there any hungarian units I should avoid due to poor performance or are most things in FoW fairly balanced once you learn how to use them?

RECON- Either Toldis or Csabas- the best thing about Hungarian tanks is you can bring 2 platoons of Toldi recon tanks w/40mm guns.

Also dont discount the Turani's- they are weak in LW but they are cheap point wise and are still good against enemy infantry of even tank destroyers as AT 9 is plenty to kill them.

Just some thoughts.

The only units that never did it for me were the nebs in an aggressive role (e.g. when not just smoking). I also never had much luck with the Cavalry or the Motorbike recon.

Otherwise I found most of the hungarian units to be useful.

I tried to only take units with the Hussar rule as a rule (well none artillery units anyway) being able to charge an extra 4 inches really catches people out.
