Hey guys,

So I'm looking at starting a long-term painting and modelling project and looking at all the options, I've decided on doing a PH/intra-Heresy SM legion. It's cliche and they're all the rage right now, but 6-7 years ago last time I toyed with it it wasn't feasible. Now it is.

The problem is I don't want to do a popular legion. More than anything i don't want to put my heart and soul into a project for people to say *groan* "not another X legion". Hence the poll.

So, vote on guys! It'd be much appreciated!

Ps. Luna wolves and Sons of Horus are in there separately as they seem to have different fan bases.

Also feel free to comment with why you like the legion. I.e. is it the Primarch? The colour scheme? Their tactics or attitude? I'd be curious to know.

What, no Alpha Legion?

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Cheers for all the votes guys! It has helped me with my decision.

I find it interesting nobody voted for Jaghatai and his boys on bikes. I like them, but not enough to be my favourite legion. Maybe many people are the same?

Cheers for the feedback dude, 1k sons and IF are favourites for me too (mostly because of their Primarchs).

1. Ultrmarines. I just really like them.

2. Pre-Heresy Thousand Sons. They are the wizards of the Legions

3. Alpha Legion. They're Legion Spec Ops.

I chose IF for my pre-heresy army largely because of the colour scheme, but also because if you're going to do IF, the siege specialists, what better setting than the biggest siege in history, Terra? They fought by the Emperor when all else failed, and led the last defence to buy him the time he needed. That, and Rogal Dorn is pretty awesome.

For the heretics, I'd pick TS for the tragedy of their fall, or Sons of Horus, again because they were pivotal in the story of the heresy.

I had no idea AL had such a large fan base, but I guess the fact that they operate quite differently from the other legions may be a factor. The way Alpharius meets Horus is also incredibly bamf.

Agreed. I think the events surrounding Magnus' horrendous blunder and the repercussions it has on his legion is fantastic story-wise. In a similar vein Konrad's story of fighting terror with terror and his final request for vindication (though borrowing some very obvious batman and Apocalypse Now elements) in a similar way add so much depth and emotion to the story of the HH.

Thanks so much for the votes guys, it's been immensely helpful and it has been really interesting watching how the results unfold. Some I could've picked, others definitely not. And I'm glad to see White Scars finally got some love!

I really like the Word Bearers and the Emperor's Children, because I source my CSM from them. I've always liked the Imperial Fists, for their siege approach, and the Raven Guard, for their guerrilla approach.

Emperor's Children - I really like the pre-corruption Emperor's Children. They had their share of scumbags, but overall they were warriors that cared about beauty, art, poetry. It's fantastic. But I have to admit after heresy I too like them. Aaahh, Slaanesh, "PORN FOR THE PORN GOD" indeed.

Death Guard - Not only do I like their style, my favorite HH character is from here: Nathaniel "Motherfrakker" Garro. This Sir, Gentleman and a Scholar and overall ass-kicker is an amazing character and I truly enjoyed reading the "The Flight of Eisenstein".

Luna Wolves - Such a fantastic legion, cursed because of a single event... their symbol and color scheme was fantastic too.

Salamanders - My beautiful Salamanders, almost crushed to a man in that single event. It's my favorite Post-Heresy Loyal "Legion", the combination of master-craftsmen and warrior is something I really enjoy.
Not only that, they are the ones who seem to care the most about the human population of the Imperium, I freakin' love it.

Thousand Sons - Their tragic fall to chaos. They really didn't deserve their fate.

I'm not much of a fan of the White Scars either. I do like the idea of a "fast attack legion". However Space Mongols is just stupid. It feels like GW just went round each of the world's major civilisations and said "make a legion out of them", but it just doesn't work when applied to Ghengis Khan in my opinion.

For me, it's Imperial Fists. I think Dorn comes across as a real hero. I really liked the Night Lords stories as well. Conrad Kurze and Sevetar were really interesting to read about in the HH novels.

I had to go for the Wolves for one reason. Everyone associated with the Legion, from the Jarls of the Great Companies all the way down to the failed aspirants turned into servitors who are mopping up blood in the surgical chambers are heroes of legend among their tribe. Combine it with a very simple heraldry that can be embellished with as much additional detail as you want and it's a recipe for a great painting project.

I went with the Imperial Fists because I like the aesthetic of shields and the architecture of fortifications. Changes in the formulation of paint mean that doing an entire army in yellow sucks a lot less than it once did.

I'd imagine part of why White Scars aren't more popular is that they kind of had a vibe of being a motorcycle wearing copy of the dopey Bill King Space Wolves. Combine that with how much it sucks to paint white and you've got a recipe for a lot of people deciding to do something else.

Salamanders and Space Wolves. I'd choose Imp Fists too if it weren't for their garish yellow paint scheme.

Thousand sons are by far the coolest and I love them but joint with them is Luna Wolves. I started them about 5 yrs ago and so I put them down.

Awesome work with the voting guys! There's so many votes I had to create a graph to help me visualize the results.

@Zed - Imperial Fists, definitely man. Like I said earlier, they're one of my favorites too. Awesome Primarch, great doctrine of warfare and you've gotta give props to someone who paints all that damn yellow! Raven Guard are great also, not least because their Primarch comes off as one of, if not the most intelligent.

@TheDraconicLord - damn dude, you have a number of favorites haha. I also appreciate the cultured aspect of the EC, it reminds me of the Librarian in the Eisenhorn trilogy who extends his pinky when drinking tea ha. I think it's awesome.

@scottmmmm & DaddyWarcrimes - I do love SM bikes, but the depth of character as a legion just doesn't seem to be there. They feel like more of a cool background character who's doing his own thing, more than anything else. Also you're right Warcrimes, painting buckets of white is a chore in of itself. And I agree wholeheartedly with you both, Dorn is the man! I read an analysis that basically painted him as the happy medium of all the other Primarch's traits, balanced to perfection. I thought it was an apt description. He does go off the rails a bit after the siege though and he has potentially the most underwhelming death in 40k.

@Wilytank - I've always had a soft spot for a fully-painted Salamanders army. Green astartes just look so damn good.

@Bacon Uprising - yep, it's pretty clear from the poll everyone loves 1k sons. You can really identify with Magnus, making a mistake that cost him dearly when there were much more deserving Primarchs of such a fall.

Yeah like Russ. The guy was an unstable, anal mentalist who had no place in 40k. Glad he's dead or gone...
