With people like this I don't know why they waste money on prisons... just take them out back and shoot them. Think that's too harsh? Don't go around killing random people and you don't have to worry.

I'd like to ask that the frankly disturbing knee jerk reactions of 'kill em all' is stopped. But, Internets.

When post #1 and #3 are "lets kill them before the cops get them" and call for lynch mobs, then the thread is already a mockery of the laws and the constitution that this veteran faught for.

If you have no family, friends, education, job, or future..... you really don't have anything to lose by killing someone. You'll just go to jail and depending on which one you might actually have a slightly upgraded life.

If you knew you'd be ripped apart by dogs if you killed someone however..... you'd think twice.

Crime rates would drop, cost savings, and if you are a law abiding citizen then you don't have to worry. The only negative thing I can think of is that sales of purina dog chow might drop since the animals are being fed through "alternative methods".

This is a remarkably unCanadian viewpoint you have.

The vast majority of these "regimes" or other countries have higher crime rates because their economy is not in a condition to support their people.

I'm talking about implementation of harsh death penalties in first world countries - where the people can choose live a life without crime. I'm aware that depending on where you live in our crazy world, you will run into those morality case studies where honest people need to steal to feed their families, etc.

Murder rates are lower in the UK, and non death penalty states in the US, then those with the death penalty. The deterrent effect of the death penalty has never been proven, apart from the fact it's morally dubious.

One thing to consider is that the current death penalty isn't all that scary - in that sense I agree with you, it's pretty useless as a deterrent.

Right now trials can drag out over 1-2 years and even then, lawyers can pull the penalty off the table. Even if you get sentenced to death then you have to wait years for anything to actually happen.

My original point was..... you probably wouldn't beat a random old man to death if you knew you'd be ripped apart by dogs/shot a few minutes after the trial ended.

Unfortunately there are too many liberals in this world for us to be able to prove this theory. I think I shall move to Texas.

Ever read Frederick Forsyth's 'The Veteran'? Good story. Could be applicable to this.

Texas just acts all tough and heartless.

But those liberals can't even execute people at the same rate as Oklahoma.
