Hey all just wondering if y'all find any of the new basing kits worthwhile? I'm thinking of maybe investing in the 40k one or the snowy one.
I ask you all because I previously had bought the "citadel masters basing kit" back when they had em(when they first came out, it was the hero kit and came with a tub of sand, a tub or snow, a tub of gravel, small and medium slate, and a TON of amazing resin skull and bone detailed pieces.) and it was EXTRAORDINARILY useful to me when I was heavily Into the hobby and the remainder of my supplies from that kit are still back home in California, started the game/hobby back up out here in New Jersey and I'm wondering if its worth investing In any of the newer kits or should I just wait until I can make a visit home and bring my stuff from out there back with me!

I have the 40k one.
Has a couple bags of slate (not in tubs), along with the resin goodies and some etched brass.
I have used it a few times to add some small things to bases. It is kinda pricey, but for me it has been worth every penny.

Good to hear! I can't locate any of the older "hero basing kit"s anywhere and would prefer one of them, but I may just go ahead and order some of these for my upcoming woo elves army! If anyone knows where I could possibly find one of the hero kits that would be so greatly appreciated!

I bought one a while back. There's a fair few nice goodies in there. I use bits from it from time to time to jazz up a dull base. Never got round to using the brass stuff, looks cool though. I'd say despite the price its a nice pack to have around.

No no no no no. Seriously dude, apart from the resin bits you can get everything in the kit for a fraction of the price, or free if you keep your eyes open. I base all my minis with slate and have never payed a single penny for it.

Not bought one, they look way too pricey for my tastes. Might be worth reclaiming bits of slate and stone from the floor and using bits from your bits box to build a nice little base.
I'd buy them for a centre piece type model if I couldn't find a something cheaper in terms of the resin pieces.
If you have the coin, go give them a try and post some pictures and your opinion!

Baking soda, Green Stuff, and stones from your neighbours garden.
Along with all the bits that usually are leftover from your army, I find it really hard to justify the price for any of the GW basing kits.
(The sand is most grievous offender. Either get some fine sand from a local hardware store (for double the price of the kit you get a kilo -bucket.), or just look arround your area and fill up a bucket for free (a friend of mine filled a tupperware box during his holiday).)

I wish I could find slate that easy in Florida... We've got a lot of sand here though. It's more of a powdery sand though unless you go to Cocoa Beach, then you might also get cigarette ash in the sand as well.
I will say if you use baking soda, be prepared for it to gradually turn brown. It does that in your fridge too. Even if you color it with paint, it will still brown up. You will however have fresh smelling models.
The basing kit is worth it if you don't have easy access to the materials. I would advise against using any dirt other than sand. No potting soil as it just doesn't give you the right affect and if the model ever gets damp or its humid outside (we get very humid weather in Florida) and it will retain water. At paint on the sand will fall off as well. The stuff you're buying is usually a better quality so you don't have to sift anything out of your basing material. Again that is highly dependent on where you live.

I bought the basing sand years ago from gw and have never really used it like a previous poster said everything can be found much cheaper or free. Nearly all my bases are made from building materials found on sites when I'm working ( you get some funny looks picking random stones etc up) but the effect is amazing.
Nature is also your friend dried twigs and grasses work really well and I have always wanted to try moss but never worked out how I would go about that.
