I narrowed down the nations I want to play to either Germany or USSR, but I'm having trouble deciding between the two.

I really like the battalions and large unit sizes you get with Soviets. I also like the rule where companies of 15 teams need to take 10 hits before making a motivation test. I'm not a fan of the 'hen and chicks' rule, but can live with it.

I like the elite aspect of the German units, almost everything seems to be Veteran skill and they have some really fun special rules (Mission Tactics seems to be very popular) and units (i.e. Tigers, King Tigers, pioneer transports can have limited use rocket launchers, etc).

I do plan on taking some tanks, possibly a unit of rocket launchers, artillery, and some other units to round out whichever I end up with.

If I'm planning to play an Infantry army, which in your opinion is usually more fun to play? (I'm not looking for the most competitive army, I'm looking for what is more enjoyable and has a nice variety). It looks like USSR is one of the least-played armies which also has some appeal to me (I tend to play armies in other wargames that are less commonly seen), but that's not a huge deal to me.

Cost is not really an issue to me, so I'm not taking that into consideration at all.

The next Late War book is Eastern Front based and as I understand it the Soviets are getting a bit of a much needed boost.

It might be worth getting in on the ground floor so to speak.

I would say if infantry is what you want to do then Soviets are a lot more fun than Germans so I would recommend them.

Hope that helps

I think Germans are great mainly as their more generic lists like grenadiers, panzer company FJ etc can be used in LW and MW and almost any front too

The soviet infantry list are also pretty much the same between between MW and LW.

True. Of my Soviet stuff only the T34-85s and Spetsnaz are unsuitable for mid war. Because the T34s Plastic Soldier models I can swap out the turrets for 76s and use the models in mid war.

If they release a list for early war that allows SMG equipped infantry I'll probably modify my army for early war. My 120mm mortars, PTRDs, Maxim HMGs, DShK AAA trucks and Sturmovik will all be good for early war (or mid war).

You could even take KV's they will be in EW, are in MW and LW.

It's one of the great things about Soviets they kept using most of their equipment for most of the war. I guess when you have the worlds largest army it takes time to replace your equipment. I still hope they do the LW Soviet VS Japs battles as the Soviets still had BT-5's and 7's in their armies on that front. They would be fun to use in LW and probably about 10 or 15pts each!

That would depend upon how picky you are about your KVs being the right model for the period.

I thought KV-1e's were used for the whole war?

Yes, there's no list yet but there no doubt will be. You are limited to just the 'e' for all three periods though.
