I'm new to the whole thing and I've been planning to get a rulebook real soon, but I don't know whether it's worth it to get one now, or just wait until the new set of rules come out.

I've been googling this and nothing has helped so far.

Also, is that new, smaller looking rulebook worth it to get? I know it only just came out, but I'd like some advice from people who have more experience with all this than me.

Hive Fleet Viscera - 600pts

"We cannot live through this. Mankind cannot live through this. In a single day they have covered this planet with a flood of living blades and needle-fanged mouths. Kill one, and ten take its place. If they are truly without number, then our race is doomed to a violent death before every shred of our civilisation is scoured away by a force more voracious than the fires of hell themselves.

The 6th ed rules are only about a year old at this point.

I wouldn't get the new small rulebook, I'd buy the Dark Vengence starter set and that includes a small rulebook, along with two small armies to start with.

I like to say I have two armies: Necrons, and Imperium.....

Yeah but, I already have models and all, and it'd just be a waste of money and plastic to get the Dark Vengence set.

Generally we get a new rule book every 4-6 years. So 6th still has some life left in it.

There are a number of ways to get the rules.

Electronically. Via iPads and e-books. Pros/cons and price varies

From the DV box. Small, softback rules. Either from e-bay, or direct from the box (which happens to be packed full of minis you may be able to use/trade/sell)

New, small, hardback. Just the rules, small enough to drag around. A little pricy for what you get, IMHO, but gets the job done if you don't want to bother with DV and just want the crunch.

Big, old, Hardback. More expensive. Contains all the fluff and background, plus the rules. Massive enough to stop small-arms fire or bludgeon your foes to death. (note, don't try this)

There may be some LE rulebooks floating around, if you want to pay even more for an even larger book.

Nice, if the current edition really has been out for about a year, then I wouldn't mind spending money on a rulebook that'll last me 3-5 years.

I just enjoy reading everything, oftentimes I bring my codex to work and school in case I get a little free time to read it, even if I've already read everything in it, haha.

I'm a sucker for pictures, so I'd love the big rulebook, then again it'd be heavy and awkward to carry all around with me, and the smaller one seems to be the perfect size to just bring along.

It'll take a bit of thinking to decide, but really all I needed to know if it was worth the money to buy either before the next edition comes out. Thanks a bunch!

Do you have an iPad?

What minis or armies do you have? Why is DV a waste of money? This is GW, we never can have enough plastic crack.

You can go Ebay, and pay about $30.

You can get the original $100 book get the rules an all the extra fluff and what not in there.

Good luck in your choice.

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

You can get a DV mini rulebook online for around $20. It should be fine for at least another 3-4 years if not longer.

Its perfectly safe to buy the current rules right now without worrying about an update.

Things change so often? Can you please explain? GW doesn't even update much via FAQ. Also with FAQs you still need the main rules anyways.

You still have 3-5 years of playing 6th edition as was said before.

Don't engage it Davor. He has 3 locked threads on the first page of 40k discussions for a reason.

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

I don't have an iPad unfortunately.

I play Tyranids. DV is a waste of money for me since, though I do get the cheaper rulebook, I won't be painting the figures inside. I don't really like to paint faces on people, and I wouldn't use those models in any way, except for maybe dead props for my bigger 'nids.

You're new.

What you fail to realize is hardly anyone ever has 'just one army'

Eventually you'll want another.

And check out the DV contents, and compare the contents and cost for what buying similar unit boxes seperately.

Its a massive deal. I bought two.

4 years between editions, we have until July 2016 before 7th.

GW want to release all new dexes this edition and are looking like they are going to deliver on that.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

If you're new I think the big rule book is pretty good there's plenty of fluff and hobby related stuff in there. You'll be grand time wise it'll probably be another 3 years until the new rules drop.

Outer Space, Apparently

The big rulebook is better in the long run if you like the 40k background (but it is really annoying to flick through for the rules, as the background makes up for roughly 2 3rds of the book ). However, if you want portability, get "the rules" or the mini one in DV (which by the way is a bargain).

GW also like releasing books like Death From The Skies and Crusade Of Fire (which I bought yesterday - score!). I think this is a good indicator that this edition is here to last, but I would like to see another campaign book soon...

While that may be true, I've spent a lot of time deciding on my first army. And if I pick another, it'd likely be Tau, or Necrons.

I'm just not fond of painting people and faces.
