With the new SM Dex out soon, I've decided not to jump onto the bandwagon and go for something a little older with SW.

Just wanted to know, how they fair competitively, what are their weaknesses and are they a fun army?

Thanks.

I'm pretty new to the army but they seem solid to me so far, the main weakness I've found of the army in 6th is reliable AA but this can be offset with allies and fortifications. Long Fangs are still very good, they have the best psychic defence in the game and their rune priests are a steal at 100 points

Space wolves have the advantage that they are a codex that can cover most bases of a competitive list whilst still being fluffy. A good SW list will focus on a core of Grey Hunters, one of the best troops choices in the game, who are lethal at range and in CC, Long Fangs for fire support, and Rune priests for HQ. At higher points levels (1500+), you can chuck in some Thunderwolf Cavalry, an out and out assault unit that can wreck most targets when used with a Thunderwolf Lord.

SW are an incredibly fun army to play, they have great fluff and history which really does bleed over into the playstyle. I always say that if you achieve something epic in the game, regardless of the overall outcome, you have forged a Saga worthy of legend and can therefore take (moral) victory.

I would also point you to this article, it basically goes through the 'do's and 'don't's' of playing wolves, and is really required reading for wolf players:

Welcome to the pack.

Thanks.

That's the one thing I wanted... A fluffy army that's powerful.

I absolutely love the idea of Thunderwolf Cav. I was thinking of going with an army based on Harald Deathwolf's Great Company.

TWC are always good, and great models to boot. With their fast movement, they pair well with a Drop Pod list, able to move up using the pods for cover and hit like a sledgehammer on turn 2.

Ok... That's a little bit amazing.

That combo with Vindicators as back up should annihilate anything.

Noticed that the good thing about SW, is that they can ignore flyers.

With the above tactic, they should be able to get into cc on T2, making them untargetable and TWC have multiple wounds and possible 3++ against Drakespam.

One more quick question... The battleforce...

Can you make 20 GH from it?

The battleforce is great, as it has 2 Space Wolf Pack sets in it, which gives you all the parts to Grey Hunter, Blood Claws, and a ton of special weapons for Wolf Guard. I think in total you get something like 4 sets of LC, 4 hammers, 4 axes, 4 shields and 4 swords, and then pistols, bolters, chainswords and heads galore, enough to wolf up some Devastators for Long FAngs and the scouts for Wolf Scouts. The Drop pod is always good. I'd suggest a good starting list based on what you've said would be:

Wolf Lord, Saga Of the Bear, Thunderwolf, Power Fist, Storm Shield: 235

Wolf Scouts, 2x plasma pistol, plasma gun: 120

Grey Hunters, Drop pod, 2x plasma gun: 195

Grey Hunters, Drop pod, 2x plasma gun: 195

2 Thunderwolf Cavalry, one SS/PF: 155

5 Long fangs, 2x ML, 2x HB: 105

total: 1005 (if your opponent is picky over the 5 points extra, just drop a PP on the scouts)

This can be built from one battleforce, one box of TWC, one box of devastators and an extra drop pod, and gives you a fast aggressive list which fits the W style, should give you a feel for the army, and is a good base for expanding. The pods come in on T1&2, the TWC join the lord to move up behind them (the lord can actually split off to take out 2 targets once you reach the enemy. The scouts come in from the back and hit rear armour of a tank with plasma, then just run interference. You are light on ati-flier, but your ability to take the game to the enemy deployment zone mitigates this a bit. If you find it a problem, drop the scouts and take an ADL/Bastion with quad gun and man it with the LF leader.

Hope that helps.

For a starter list that's pretty damn solid (I'm the guy who wrote the SW 6th ed Tactica article btw), for expanding from there I'd recommend a Rune Priest and then more Long Fangs and Grey Hunters. Welcome to the pack brother!

As others have said, Sw are good, but suffer without allies

in 6th ed, with the advent of flyer spam.

I still enjoy playing mine, and love the way the models look,

and the conversion opportunities are second only to Orks.

As for being competitive, they are, and they aren't. They'll get

smoked by heldrakes, and without allies, can't effectivley

combat them. I hate using allies, so that's kind of the

boat I'm in. I just have to eat what the flyers are serving, and

just try and win the ground war. We'll be getting some 6th ed

love within the next 6th months it would seem, so find some

players who wouldn't mind not using flyer spam, and you'll

have fun with SW. Grey hunters/thunderwolf lords/long

fangs/and rune priests are the mainstay of the army. And

don't use bloodclaws....please. Oh, and with wolf scouts, take a melta gun, not plasma.

Thanks for the advice.

I think I'm going to have to go 2nd hand for the army as I've basically been priced out of the hobby.

I cannot justify buying new models as they are just getting way too expensive.

IMO Vindicators don't synergize well with drop pods. But if you're a crazy, wolf, son with an unknown father, than raining str10ap2 danger close isn't your type of problem haha

I need to return some video tapes.

Vindis can work well with pods, as the whole point of a pod list is to be aggressive and apply overwhelming force to a single point on the enemy line, which is something vindis can do well. On the other hand, Long-range fire support is less useful as it ends up getting separated.

Well, I've joined a new meta since I moved house 100 miles south of where I was, so I'm basically playing blind and starting from scratch... it matters little what I take as I have no clue what I'm facing locally.
