Thanks for the article. I actually like the look of that old rhino better than the new one.

I'm from the future. The future of space

It was GW's first plastic vehicle kit, sale price of £5 each or 3 for £10 (damn you inflation busting price rises!)

If the prices just kept up with inflation, the current price would be a box of 3 rhinos for right around £22. GW's price rises have indeed been inflation busting.

I think the old rhino is a great kit and the new one was overdesigned in comparison.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

My favourite rhinos is FW's MKIC DEIMOS PATTERN RHINO.

The sad thing is I can pick up the bundle of 3 Diemos patterns for only $10 more CAD than 3 of GW's plastic rhinos.

The old school rhino is decent looking too, just a bit smaller than I'd like.

Nice review, though I would have liked a few more pictures. I've got a few of these and they aren't bad kits, but they do have the odd indent at the top of the front angle.

Interestingly there's a used game store near me that has a few of these in the original box for sale.

I never cared for the look of the old Rhino. It was even smaller than the current one, and the current one only holds about 6 marines at best. It's too reminiscent of the early 90's sci fi style for my taste. The current one is far from perfect, but I prefer it.

The FW variants like the one above I prefer over both vanilla versions. Much better looking.

In it's simple glory the old Rhino was a great design in an era where tinkering around with your models was highly encouraged by the workshop. The variants GW later on provided were foreshadowed by the great article that found it's way into the famous "Compendium". You could find a kind of proto-predator there as well as a proto-razorback. I myself have butchered one rhino into a medical emergency track, another into a wrecker. (sorry no pics provided due to lack of digital camera). The models screamed for conversion, and they made it easy.
The new model? With details like the splinter shielded viewports including wipers it looks definitely more functional, but less funky. Sorry no Sci-Fi this one, not even kinda rivet-punk like the guard models. Just plain contemporay technology, nothing to my taste.
Competitive gamers will complain about taking advantage with the smaller vehicle, and they are right. But my gaming buddies are more of the "rule of cool" attitude. Beside my vintage predator/Rhino/razor back fleet merges nicely with the crowds of oldtime plastic beakies I use to field. Now and then when my army is deployed there are gatherings of enthusiasts pointing out the variants of metal predator turrets to the younglings, or telling things like "and THAT's the model to this strange razorback configuration".
Besides, I love my predators, I field them often. With two side sponsons, of course, ain't no razorbacks, sir! That should be enough to convince everybody my rhino chassis are not on the field because I want to win at all costs.

I find it off talking about the old rhino as being 'classic' after it only left production in 2005 after 15 years being made. I don't really associate it as a Rogue Trader model as it was made long after that. The moulds were obviously tired towards the end with sink marks and the like appearing, original RT era models are crisper, so worth getting if you can.

I have the old predator also, the most flimsy part was the thin rail at the top in my opinion. The first thing i did was replace them with metal rods.

Made the conversion to whirlwind using warhammer square (monster?) slotta bases.

Anyone do the Spartan conversion? You need a Rhino and a Land Raider. Seemed a bit expensive even then.

You mean this one?

You only needed 2 parts, i think and depending on how you built the original rhino you would have those parts as leftovers.

Cool retro-review! Yeah, I totally made a Spartan and Sabre using the old White Dwarf articles. The instructions for the Spartan were in WD 119, and yes, it combined the old Land Raider, old Rhino and plasticard templates to make it. In WD 120, it showed you how to take the left over parts from the Rhino and LR and make a Sabre Tank Hunter! See pg. 9 of my WIP thread in my sig if anyone is interested!

Checked out your thread. Really brilliant work. You nailed the Spartan and your Flying Brick MK1 Thunderhawk is inspired. Did it ever get painted?

I prefer the new design, though 5£ for a rhino is a pretty great bargain.

@ Eilif: Hehe, thanks, that's the million dollar question! One day I'm going to sit down and have a painting party. When I started my projects thread I had also started graduate school, so my time allows me to build, but painting not so much! Hopefully one day soon!

I picked up two old Rhinos in a huge eBay lot recently. One standard and the other with the boxy metal Predator turret on.

Annoyingly these weren't listed in the eBay lot and was only just after getting the FW Demios models.

I loved these back in the day, me and my brother spilt a 3 pack between our IG and squat armies (I got one Grrrr!) then proceeded to put the standard 4mm of paint on each while snapping the handrails at every opportunity!

I really like the FW retro styled Rhino, I think I'd have to add handrails though...

I bought several of those 3 rhino boxes back in the day (still have 8 of them, too). I even replaced those rails with brass rod - those thin plastic ones were so fragile.

I still have a few of the metal predator turrets, too.
Both the rounder ones, and the boxy ones. The turrets are on newer bodies, now, though (the old rhinos stayed as APCs - I like my 'TANKS' bigger than my tracks).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

The rhino is one of the minis that I love both the classic one and the new one.

Well also remember, thats when we had beakie marines who were much smaller as well.

I totally understand. Building and modding comes much easier to me than painting when I have limited time. At least your hobby v school priorities are correct.

Or are they....?

Hehe, well I was extremely careful about building my T-hawk in my office so that my Thesis Supervisor would never accidently catch me, especially when I had a chapter due!

Wow, Look at all that positive commentary!

Thanks for all your comments - the constructive stuff is definitely being taken on board!

Given the response we're thinking about putting together a bit of a classic Rhino showcase, to be honest!

But I come bearing updates, as in the thread title - WHFB High Elves and a Painting in Progress. Battle report for the Elves to follow this week!

Thanks Again guys!
