On your planet, burning your men!

Hey guys,

I am having an extremely hard time composing my squads without any of the rulebooks or codices.

I am making an assault squad and have two flamers in, but they are 1hand flamers and I cant find the rules for those, I have a BT 4ed codex but they aren't named in the weapon list, does that mean i cant use them?

This is really just the tip of the iceberg on problems I am running in to, and I won't ask them all here, I could go on forever in all honesty, as a New player and Black Templar player ( I use the codex but have my own color scheme lore etc.), what books should I get so I can get around by myself, for most of the time?

I thought of the 40k rulebook, anything else that is a must-have as a space marine player? I really just want to get going without having to search for threads every bump in the road I run in to.

Tyvm for reading

1. If the codex (or FAQ's etc) don't mention it, you can't use it.
2. In 7 days there will be a new Black Templar-Codex, I think you should really get that one.
3. The BRB has weapon-profiles, but that doesn't allow you to take just any weapon you want.

My advice: Try to get the DV-rulebook from Marktplaats or Ebay and buy the BT-codex next week (or pre-order it on a webshop with a 20% discount).
They also released a mini-rulebook, but that one is around 40 euro and too expensive in my opinion.

In order to play the game and build a list you really need the rulebook and army book.

Really, it is better to start with the rulebook, allow that to guide your choice of army and then allow the codex to guide your choice of models, but as that horse has bolted, just try to get the pair of books as soon as you can (but don't go buying the old Codex, it will be utterly useless for anything but a bit of background material within a week)

As others have said, you need a copy of the rules, and the codex. BT are being wrapped up into the main C:SM, which will be out in a week. You will want to pick that up.

As far as I know, the only forces to use hand flamers are Blood Angels and Sisters of Battle. Not 100% on that, but I know codex marines don't. Normal assault marines can take a normal flamer in the squad though. If you have a guy with paired flamer pistols, and have him counts-as a marine with a normal flamer, I suspect most people won't even raise an eyebrow over it. You'd just have to remember that he doesn't have paired CC weapons, like the rest of his squad, so won't get as many attacks.

At this point, I'd put any assembling of minis that involve wargear choices on hold for a week. Wait until we get the new rules, and build with them in mind.

I had already started with adding 2 1hand flamers to the assault marines when I came past this issue, time to deconstruct then, thank god i havent already painted them up though!

I do hope to buy the new BT(sm) codex, I just hope they aren't 70€ like the new ones on GW website! That would hurt. Ill see if I can maybe lend the rulebook for now, as i prioritize the codex first.

Thanks for the tips guys, appreciating the fast response

You can easily get the small rulebook from the Dark vengeance set on Ebay.

You cant play this game without a BRB and codex. Even those of us that have played the game like crazy still dip into them for references and such a LOT.

Ive played like 30+ games of orks since 6th ed (not joking) and i still go back in to it to double check things because some of it just doesnt happen that often, like i keep forgetting what my Gretchin leadership is because usually theyre either ignored or wiped out in 1 shot lol
Incidentally i play Tau too, but mainly orks. So ive played much more than 30 games since 6th lol
