Saw this on Faeit212 http://natfka.blogspot.nl/2013/08/a-list-building-function-built-into.html#more
So it looks like there is a List building feature, on the iPad version. I checked out on my iPad and see it says "Codex Marines Enhanced Edition". It costs $69.99 CanadianI. believe the Enhanced edition could be the list building feature. Not sure if there will be a regular feature or not. I wonder if this will just be for SM, or will be for all up coming codexes and if the older 6th edition ones will be able to purchase one for their army as well
Sorry I don't know how to provide links to the iPad store. Maybe someone else can do that.

So the iPad version does have an army builder.
The iPad Edition of Codex: Space Marines features all the great content of the paper version, but includes additional features such as 360º images of miniatures and a quick navigation system that allows you to move between unit entries and rules at the tap of a screen. It's a very handy function when you're in the heat of battle and you need to find out how many shots a grav-cannon can fire. This will also be the first Digital Codex to include audio quotes, so you can click on any of the many quotes scattered throughout the book and have them read out to you. One of the biggest features though, is the addition of an army list builder. Simply enter your units into the builder (picking weapon options and upgrades as you go) to find out just how many points of the Emperor's finest you have in your collection.

Several folks have discussed this on Dakka, especially in the Space Marine release rumor thread.
The iPad preview page of the list builder has quite a few typos (sergeant, crusader, lightning, etc.) and seems to have some upgrades either omitted (plasma cannon, multi-melta, lascannon, and locator beacon for the drop pod) or wrong (meltagun as heavy).
I think it is a great idea but poor execution by GW.

The good news is that they update their iPad content periodically and you get the changes for free.
The downside is that they don't tell you when they make changes so you have to go looking in the iTunes store.

iPads are nice for things other than GW codices as well. They make handy Internet browsers and have all sorts of apps. The fact that GW is releasing quality apps on it is a bonus.

Well son of a bitch. I did not know is.
Anyways, I'm never too concerned about the updates. It lets me know when I have them and I can opt to update em.
I'd prefer some sort of well done tablet stand alone, if only because I find myself having to fix battle scribe often.

How is this a list builder? All I see is "total collection" and "current unit". It looks like it allows you to tally up your entire collection, not make individual lists.

If you can tally up your whole collection, you can tally up part of your collection, or parts of your collection that do not exist. Then, you can use that to determine a "collection" of under X points. Basically substitute the word "collection" for the word "army" and you're good to go. Probably can't print though.

What makes you think you can remove items from your collection? That's just speculation.
As much as I'd love to see an official GW army builder app (for android, obviously), this isn't it.

What makes you think you can't? Especially given that, as much as GW would like to believe it so, collections don't exclusively grow. You're also assuming you can save anything at all, rather than having to recalculate every time you open the book.

It costs more than the hardcover. No thanks.
The only reason I'll even consider buying a digital version of a book is if it's substantially cheaper. I'm not paying more money when I'm not even getting a physical product that I can claim I own out of the "deal".
It's a nice idea and works as an incentive to consider buying digital products, but not for that price.

Keep your eyes open and there's pretty often 20% off iTunes cards, which are helpful.
Here's a thread with a bunch of Canadian iTunes card deals:
http://forums.redflagdeals.com/official-20-off-itunes-card-thread-post-current-deals-here-1121136/32/
Gives the same deal as a discount retailer would on the Codex.
Very impressed that GW put the army list builder in the book. Is there an exporter, or a way to email out a list? That's the difference between it being a fun tool and being amazingly useful.

I like the iPad versions of the codices. I have the one for the Tau and the Dark Angels. In general, they are more enjoyable to read, better references for painting, and it is easier to look up the special rules for units and equipment.
However, there is a dark side to them as well.
First, there is a limit to how many publications you can fit on an iPad. So far, I have not figured out how to move GW publications to the iCloud.
Second, there is the unknown of what happens once your iPad is either no longer serviceable or a new version of IOS is released. Will you still be able to access the publication?
These concerns make me leery of getting the SM codex for iPad since I expect to use it a lot for the 3-4 years that it will be available.

Yeah I agree with the sentiment, I have no idea why, but I definitely feel I am getting ripped if the digital version isn't cheaper than the print one.
Probably pretty weird considering I just spent an outrages £70 on the Raven Guard Codex. I haven't bought anything GW in 2013 so, I figured I could push the boat out, but.. Its weird eh? I don't mind paying 70 for something tangible, but digital products just seem to be so often free, that I feel a bit weird splurging on them.
Im sure its irrational, because I am well aware that heaps of effort goes into them, probably just as much as a paper one, but still.. It doesn't sit well with me, if the price is the same, I cant imagine anyone choosing digital over a proper hardback book. I think I would only feth the hardcover codex off altogether and buy the digital one if it was at least.. 30% cheaper?

Staggeringly stupid of me, but I didn't think about the 20% off. There's good availability in the UK, too. It makes a significant difference (altho of course the hardbacks are usually available at a discount, too). Thanks! Yes, would be great if you can export altho I'd be surprised. As you'll know, it's often murder getting stuff onto or off an iPad.

I haven't bought a hardcover either, but for me the issue is that the size of the digital books are getting huge. The first few were only 150mb or so, the latest ones are 1.5GB. I'd love to see an option to not include the 360 degree views of models.

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. The screenshot does not include the actual "collection screen", which is where you would remove items. It only shows the unit options screen, which is not where you would remove a unit from your collection.

All of your purchases are stored under your account and are accessible on any apple device, at any time, that can read that particular file. If you had multiple ipads you could see the digital books on all of them. Eventually, when Mavericks comes out, you'll be able to view e-books on the mac as well.
As for the storage limitation on your ipad, you can freely delete the books from the ipad (as long as they are legally purchased ). Again, all your purchases are tied to your account for download at any time, from anywhere. The same applies if your ipad takes a nose dive. If you throw the ipad in the garbage and you get a new one, the purchases can be retrieved by simply entering your itunes information. This applies to anything bought on itunes/ app store on all products that support that software (itunes: mac/ windows, app store: mac).
Hope that helps.

This is fine if you're at home and want to download a codex you've previously purchased, and even then it can take a fair amount of time to grab that 1.5gb file just to take a peek at a rule you're curious about. I have a plan on my cellphone that allows tethering, and live in an area with decent LTE coverage, but I still would rather have the files stored on the ipad for whenever I might want to look at something. The GW store I usually play at seems to have been built by someone that loves Farraday cages, as I get almost no signal in the store. If I wanted to check out a rule or unit from a codex I don't play often I'd have to tether to my phone then stand outside or in my car for the 20 or so minutes it takes to download the codex. Not exactly convenient.
