During its PAX panel today, Gearbox announced Homeworld: Shipbreakers, a new game being developed in cooperation with Blackbird Interactive.

Blackbird was previously developing the game as a spiritual successor to Homeworld with the title Hardware: Shipbreakers, but Gearbox confirmed today that it will now be released as part of the franchise instead, and Gearbox will provide financial support to make sure the game can be completed and achieve Blackbird's vision.

Shipbreakers joins the previously-announced HD remakes of Homeworld and Homeworld 2 that are currently in development, as well as the "classic" versions Gearbox will be releasing.

Gearbox acquired the rights to Homeworld from THQ in April. The HD remakes are expected to arrive in the first half of 2014.

This is promising news.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Not going to hold my breath. Gearbox involved with an IP that is not their own? Going to stay as far away from that untill it's actually out.

As much as I'd like to get excited, the Gearbox name has been seriously tarnished in my eyes. I can't believe anything they say about the game until it's been out for a week and Metacritic says it's good.

The team that is actually making the game is composed largely of ex-Relic devs who worked on the original games, the whole reason their "spiritual-successor" is getting a name-change and access to the real Homeworld IP is that the team contacted Gearbox after the latter won the rights and persuaded them to give them access and funding.

Having said that: meh. The Homeworld story was pretty much wrapped up in a bow after Homeworld 2, I've never seen the need for a direct sequel, and I hope they don't end up retconning a bunch of stuff in order to shoehorn in this new title.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.

"Your society's broken, so who should we blame? Should we blame the rich, powerful people who caused it? No, lets blame the people with no power and no money and those immigrants who don't even have the vote. Yea, it must be their fething fault." - Iain M Banks

"The language of modern British politics is meant to sound benign. But words do not mean what they seem to mean. 'Reform' actually means 'cut' or 'end'. 'Flexibility' really means 'exploit'. 'Prudence' really means 'don't invest'. And 'efficient'? That means whatever you want it to mean, usually 'cut'. All really mean 'keep wages low for the masses, taxes low for the rich, profits high for the corporations, and accept the decline in public services and amenities this will cause'." - Robin McAlpine from Common Weal

That may be so, but we know for a fact gearbox is in the business of swapping development teams and shuffling money around much to the detriment of a project. I don't trust them.

I agree about the story though. Don't really see a point to a direct sequel.

This isn't a sequel. Shipbreakers has been in independent development for a while now and had little to do with Homeworld other than some of the original devs and an art style.

All this really means is that they will try and cram this game into the Homeworld universe. Hopefully there will actually be single player now though....

I have a mild interest in this game although there are some issues, not least the underwhleming trailerified gameplay video that was released a month or so ago.

Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.

Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

This guy gets it.

I've been following Hardware:Shipbreakers for a while because of it's awesome art style and cool promo material. I'll admit that i also found the 'gameplay' footage they released was a bit underwhelming and hopefully that's because of funding, something this deal might fix.

Blackbird have started advertising for a senior level designer so it seems that we will be getting a proper single player game after all.

Cautiously optimistic. I'm more interested in the HD remakes, as the first game is my favorite game of all time. Everything about that game when it was released gave me the shivers - that opening cinematic where they ships are flying around the mothership was amazing, and the story is still the only RTS story to ever make me give a gak. I even loved Cataclysm.

Its just been announced that SHipbreakers will be getting a traditional release so its no longer going to be F2P.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAhahahahahhah... oh wait you're serious?

Yeah, because they had such a great track record on DNF and A:CM. If they manage to not ruin this one I'll be extremely surprised.

To be honest it's going to take a lot of convincing to get me to ever buy a Gearbox game again. After the shenanigans they pulled with A:CM I just don't trust them anymore.

Supposedly all Gearbox are doing is funding the game and providing developmental support, it has been in independent development for months prior to Gearbox's involvement.
