Hey All,

I'm very new to 40k when it comes to the actual board game (painted 5 Dark Angles in the painter kit). I recently purchased a Dark Vengeance starter set and cant wait to get the models painted and then using them playing with a friend. I do however have a opportunity that came up recently. A local gamer is selling his Chaos army (the army I like the best and want to start building) and the deal seems amazing. I was hoping the good people at dakka dakka could tell me if I'm being a fool or not.

The items included are:
10 Chaos Space Marines
5 Possessed Chaos Space Marines
20 Cultists
1 Chaos Lord
6 Chosen
1 Helbrute
3 Chaos Bikes
1 Chaos Rhino
1 Chaos Predator
1 Heldrake
1 Chaos Space Marine Codex

All of this for about $110. From my research, he seems to be selling a Dark Vengence set, a CSM Battleforce, a Predator, and a Heldrake. All the models are assembled and primed black. Is this the killer deal I was hoping for in order to break into 40k? or am i missing something?

Appreciate any and all info/tips and thanks again!

Yeah, that's a pretty good deal indeed.

Best check the quality of the models though. They could be all broken and lathered in far too much paint and need a lot of work done to them to make presentable.

As long as they're not horribly assembled, that's a rock solid deal.

Yeah, that's a heck of a deal if the models are in good shape.

Are these viable to start an army though? A lot of battle reports I've watched don't seem to field any of them other than the heldrake, rhino and CSMs. Occasionally the Helbrute. It's cool to get a bunch of units, but are they crap units? I don't own a codex yet or even know what individual stat values mean (I will soon though!), but I do understand this is the 6th edition and units could now be basically just for show if not viable.

Agree with everyone who posted before me, if the models are in reasonable condition then you got yourself a deal.

I probably would've asked $180 for this same models.... and even then I'd be giving then a decent deal.

That's a great deal. I'd double check that the Codex is the 6th edition one (hardback and just one Chaos Marine on the cover as opposed to the paperback 5th edition one with a Terminator Lord and a few other Marines). Even if it isn't the rest still makes it worthwhile.

The Possessed, Chosen and the Helbrute are not competitive, but even without them the offer is good. The remaining units you will want to use.
It would be good to get the bits from the predator so you can re-configure it's weapons to your current list's needs.

Unless its been hot-glued into a big ball it should be a great deal. Considering retail cost of the codex($50), the Heldrake($74) already puts you over $110.

Oh, and remember to see if you can get him to throw in any of the leftover bits. You will want that stuff for future builds and it doesn't sound like he will need it.

Side note here, actually. The Chosen I assume are the ones from Dark Vengeance - as a unit they're too costly for what they bring, but taken individually they make great Champions for other units. The one with a power maul even makes for a great Lord if painted up nicely enough, the model's that good.

Possessed aren't horrible - they certainly used to be - there are just better options both for close combat and in the Elite slot. If you get them though, at least try them out and see how you like them, they work just fine for fun non-competitive games.

Helbrutes are just about cheap enough that they can still represent a threat if you take more than one.

Even if you only want the "non-competitive" choices to paint, the rest is gold for that price, again granted it isn't an assortment of glue-balls. I'm envious!
