It sounds like the depth of the game is giving players trouble and that is a player by player issue. I love WMH because of its depth and that it rewards skill and experience. Its only natural that this would be a deterent for some players. For those who feel this way, I'd recommend finding another game that better suites you. There are plenty of casual WMH players as well. Be clear with the opponents you choose that you're a casual player and want a more relaxed game. It can go a long way to removing the "GOTCHA" factor, which honestly starts to decline after playing awhile. Another option is to ask your local PG to help you if you are struggling. Reach out to the community for support which is very strong and welcoming, not to mention the hundred podcasts which release tons of great info on the game and helps build community.
Anything that requires skill also in turn requires dedicated time to harness and build upon that skill. If you look at the players who are consistently placing high at tournaments, you realize how much they practice, dojo, and think about the game on a daily basis. If you're a casual player or do not get to play as often, this will take that much longer to accomplish. There are many games that require less time investment and are fun, but for me, nothing has come close to Warmachine & Hordes.
