Actually, the further explanation helps me quite a bit... Out of curiousity, have you figured out what your "heaviest" armor would be, and compared that DR to what potential damage could be done by high damage weapons?

Have you thought about any sort of Keyword "mechanic" ie. a Mace has the keyword "blunt" and plate armor has the keyword "slash"

Due to one having the "opposite keyword" there is a damage bonus(weapon) or damage penalty (armor) due to realistically, in this example at least, a blunt object doing more potential damage to plate than a slashing weapon?

To be honest, the type of weapons and equipment will vary from setting to setting; this is meant to be fairly adaptable and generic (partly so I don't get bored), so for a Sci-fi setting like Star Wars armour would be less but there would be more use of cover bonuses, in a Warhammer Fantasy setting obviously armour would play a more prominent part, cover less so. I haven't yet got to the stage where I'm running through this kind of stuff in terms of potentials and probabilities. The numbers I used were just examples pulled from thin air.

Interesting idea about the 'weapon type' sort of idea, it's something that would undoubtedly add depth, but the aim with this is to try and keep it simple enough that my (non-RPG playing) gaming group won't lose interest, and all the extra stuff to remember is what has generally put us off in the past. It's something I might add as an advanced rule later on, but probably won't be in the core rules. For weapons, I'm thinking of just giving them stats for Damage, Critical Bonus (the roll needed for a critical, for most weapons this will be 20) and Range. Getting bogged down in special rules and charts is something I'm trying to avoid.

Thanks for the feedback, though, I'll certainly bear it in mind.

After the world cup match is over, I'm probably going to work on my Orlock gang in an attempt to get them painted by this weekend for their first game. 5 down, 4 to go.

@Paradigm: I would lean towards simplicity and general-ness, Especially for what you want your system to do. The blunt/slashing thing is a solid concept and I've liked playing with it. Seeing a D&D fighter carrying around dagger and hammer to back up his longsword to keep covered against resistant enemies is pretty cool. It isn't cool enough to risk losing player interest though! Probably just keep all of your weapon types on a chart, maybe your swords do 10 damage with 19-20 crits, axes do 12 damage, etc.

For your mitigation through various systems, if characters are unlikely to wear armor in a given setting, potentially let them take skills or feats/perks to enhance their defense value. Or just have shorter fights due to higher damage, either way

I'm seriously considering changing the leather boots and pouches for my forge fathers to a black leather variant. Might make them look a bit more professional. May work on that a bit tonight.

That's exactly what I'm thinking. Items will all have a Damage, Defence , and Critical stat and a range. It should keep things simple enough, and there's plenty of room to expand later on. If everything has Damage and Defence stats, you can do things like parry with a sword or bash with a shield if you have to. Most weapons will only be good at one and give a minimal bonus to the other. A Lightsaber is just about the only thing I can think of that's as good both ways.

With the non-armour-heavy settings, one idea I played with is allowing multiple stats to be used. For example, if someone lobs a grenade at you, you test against Awareness and Defence +D20 to represent the ability of evading the blast as well as resisting damage from it. This would have to be offset with a greater potential damage, of course, but I think it might work. Also, like I said, cover would take the place of armour, giving a larger boost to defence, which in actuality better represents the setting; you can't just charge a guy who's got a laser gun and expect to win (unless it's 40k, of course ).

The rules should be up for feedback today or tomorrow. Thanks for the advice so far, guys.

Just spent about 3 hours cutting and making foam for my unique models in my army. Also bought some foam so it looked less ghetto than my previous foam and can carry much more.

Even made little foam carriers for my glue and cards so that they are snug during transport.

Figured out my colors, hoping to get the hand painting done on my space dwarfs tonight. Either done and dipped, or at least ready to dip tomorrow. Would be lovely if I could do the proper conversion work on their rhino and get it airbrushed today or tomorrow.

Still need to clean up my heresy Who minis.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

I got more peices of my FW Baneblade stripped. Now I am going to drill some holes for some pin and magnitize the turret sponsons. If this all goes well, I'm going to basecoat it in german grey. While I am working on the Baneblade I am going to soak my newly acquired Laser Destroyers, Tyrael and Imperius, in some simple green and get them ready for repairs.

After I get some down time I will sit down with some history books and try to find a name for my new Baneblade that will go with my plastic one Xenophon. Maybe Xenophons father Gryllus or his teacher Socrates or a commander of his. We'll see!

Nice Dred-thing, not sure with the nomenclature anymore.

Is that an Alucard I see Ruberu?

I did a lot of little things. Kickass Wife got me a couple of Infinity Minis so I got to clean/build/prime (soon to start painting) a Moran, Massai Hunter, and now I only need one more Moderator to round out my set.

I also finished cleaning, building (had to glue like 3 parts together but it was still a step) and priming my 6 Heresy Dr. Who minis for a diorama. Now I just need a Dalek or two.

Took some photos of my corporation marines and dumped them on my blog and the show off your painted deadzone/warpath thread.

Now off to paint, this supposedly sneaky Moran isn't going to paint himself bright orange! (hey, the official scheme is an almost as bright red, I guess he's just sneaky in spite of his outfit..)

I have got distracted from everything else I should be doing and started painting an Alpha Legion marine I cobbled together from bitz. It's a cool model, but I have no idea why I built it or what I'm going to do with it. Sometimes, you just gotta do stuff for the hell of it.
