Hey Dakka!

I have a large collection of unpainted, un-built and unfielded/untested Eldar. I think I have decided on a paint scheme, but that is nothing compared to what I need to do, which is assemble these pieces into an army! Of course I also might need to add some troops... and potentially convert or rearrange a bit of the collection.

Here is what I am sitting on:

Eldar Army Parts
HQ:
Eldar Warlock with Witchblade
Eldar Warlock with Witchblade and Pistol
Eldar Phoenix Lord Maugan Ra
Elites:
Eldar Fire Dragons x 7 (old school)
Howling Banshees x 7 (old school)
Troops:
Eldar Guardian Squad x 36 (Several more unbuilt)
Eldar Guardian Heavy Weapon Platform w/ vibro cannon (old school team)
Fast Attack:
Eldar Swooping Hawks x 9
Eldar Vyper Jetbike x 2
Shining Spears Jetbike x 3 (one unbuilt upgrade kit)
Eldar Jetbike x 3
Heavy Support:
Eldar Fire Prism x 1
Eldar Falcon x 2
Wraithlord x 1 (old school model)
Eldar Dark Reapers x 4

I welcome suggestions, things I should and can cut, things I might need to add...

Well, I'd keep all of these models. Maybe you could get rid of the Banshees.
I'd add some Wave Serpents to transport Fire Dragons (squads of 5 are usually sufficient) and Guardians (squads of 10). In this way you can fill four Serpents (1x FD and 3x GD). Small Windrider Jetbike units are useful as objective grabber. The same holds for the Fire Prism.
For this kind of army, I'd take a Farseer on a jetbike.

You're playing as eldar and you have no farseer. Your sin is unforgivable.

On a serious note, never underestimate the utility a jetbike seer can add to your army. It's pretty impressive for a measly 100 points.

Keeping all the units isn't that bad an idea. Are you suggesting I keep them and switch out and modify my army on the fly or just from a collectors stand-point?

I am at the part of my hobby that I would like to pare down a bit, and hone the armies I want to keep. I also have a girlfriend and future wife to keep happy! I should mention at this point that I am an artist by trade.. so most of my work is ALL over the house!

Anyway, the Warhammer Cabinet needs to be Spring cleansed! Eldar are first on the list!

Question on Howling Banshees... are they no longer good vs armor? Or do I just have a very mobile spread so going toe to toe with power armor is a bad idea? I have no problem using my tanks to duck in and out of cover and lay down withering fire.

Also from a review of the book it looks like Fire Dragons are maxed at a unit size of six? The new book is hazy as gak.. ("up to five additional") Which makes me think Guy one + 5 guys = 6?

Lastly Wave Serpents... that would be adding 4 more grav tanks to my army...is that too many tanks, I will be up to 7 at that point..

Also thanks for the beginnings here I need to shape these guys up! Also I have a model and I can't figure out what it is... I think it is either an old Death Jester or a Guardian with a Shruiken Cannon... here is an image that matches the model I pulled off of google...

Thanks!

deathmagiks: A lot of my Eldar collection was just that a Collection. I would see boxes and units I though I wanted to paint and I would pick them up.

Now that I am at the "gak is should play these guys..." level of the collection I am seeing the error of my ways!

As far as a Farseer goes... I am thinking of converting and adding to a Jetbike..

My main concern here is.... what the hell do I do with Maguan Ra... do I keep him.... do I do three HQ choices??

Check out the Chapterhouse Studios version of the jetbike kit for Eldar Jetbikes. I'm a fan of them, if not terribly disappointed at how durable they are (or aren't as the case may be).

If you're looking for 1 Take on all comers list, you might be a little hard pressed. Eldar are more than almost any other army one capable of fluidity. Magun Ra is one of the better phoenix lords, so I would keep him, but he's not going to fit every situation.

I would either convert or get rid of the falcons. Keep 1 if you must for transporting things like fire dragons (who max out at 10 man units btw: 5 man minimum squad size, + up to 5 additional, means 10 man total). Otherwise, falcons, the "mobile tank heavy gun platform" of the Eldar army, is already very well handled by Wave serpents, who put out just a withering amount of firepower.

Banshees are not used any longer because power swords no longer ignore armor, they're AP3. So, basically, you're sending in a toughness 3 model with a 4+ armor save downrange in a transport that isn't an assault transport (which means they stand around for a turn before charging) against an enemy that can easily kill a few in over watch, all just to swing your weapon at str 3 (meaning you need 5s to wound toughness 4 marines) and to ignore armor. For what you pay for them, and what you pay to get them there, they are definitely not worth it. You can use them effectively as a counter assault unit, but so can Harlequins, and are arguably better at it. Banshees will seldom see use.

P.S. the model you have pictured looks like an old school dark reaper.

i agree. i have a thing agaisnt falcons, they just dont cut it for me. whatever falcons can do, serpents do better. and are cheaper. banshees are also a no go.

Alright, so Banshees are out.

Here is my question on the Falcons. Currently they are both built each having a Scatter Laser and a Pulse Laser on the turret. I could see converting them into Wave Serpents, although I really want to keep lots of TANKS!

As far as the Farseer Jetbike, very cool, great place to start thinking about what I want to do. As an illustrator and sculptor I will probably do my own conversion . But I love seeing other takes!

So it looks like Fast Attack is shaping up...

Swooping Hawks x 9
Vyper Jetbike x1
Vyper Jetbike x 1

Auxiliary choice, or get rid of/convert stock Shining Spears x 3?

If I convert my Shining Spears I get stock bits for a Farseer w/ Shining Spear and Jetbike .

So a new army list might look more like...

HQ:
Farseer, Jetbike W/Spear
Maugan Ra
Warlock Council x2 Warlocks
1 x Witch Blade
1 x Witch Blade and Pistol

Elites:
Fire Dragons x 8
Fire Dragon Exarch w/ Fire Pike

Troops:
Rangers x 10 (ditching two of the models)
Guardians x 10
Guardians x 10
(Leaves me with 14 built/unused models + another box or so... might be conversion stock to convert build my own Rangers...)

Fast Attack:
Swooping Hawks x 9
Vyper Jetbike x1
Vyper Jetbike x 1

Heavy Support:
Fire Prism
Falcon x 1 (might convert)
Falcon x 1 (might convert)

Crap forgot...

Hold Maguan Ra to switch in for HQ, and Dark Reapers to Switch in to Heavy Support...

Or do I hold the Dark Reapers as a mainstay in the force? Up their numbers to 10 and add an Exarch? Could even keep one of the 3 older Dark Reaper Models I have for the Exarch.

Quick update I started to do conversion work on one of the Eldar Falcons.

I will have some shots up in the painting and modeling section soon... still trying to figure out the last few tweaks to the original army list.
