I was recently stricken with several boxes worth of Dark Vengeance sprues. Aside from drowning in cultists, I also had a large number of Chosen with no real function as units in the game. Taken as a single unit, the 6 models in the box are ridiculously overpriced with their variety of fists, claws and power weapons. I decided to carve them up into something more worthwhile, and in doing so was hit with the incredibly bad idea to start fresh with a new chaos army.

Having remodeled a Helbrute earlier into a plascannon variant, I decided this was going to be a 5-man squad of Slaanesh Plasma Chosen. All plasma, all the time. Each would get their own plasgun, and their expensive melee weapons would be replaced with far more manageable chainswords.

The first guy was the Aspiring Champion of the squad. His power mace was replaced with a power sword off the new raptor sprue, and his helmet-holding arm given a combi-plasma. The combi-weapon was made from a plasma pistol and a boltgun. Liberal use of liquid green stuff plugged up the hole from the helmet. He was given an older backpack, while the rest of the squad will be getting the new DV ones. He just needs to stand out a bit more than the rest of his over-decorated brethren.

Next up is the basic grunt. It was surprisingly difficult to chop up his bolter-holding arms and stick a plasgun in there. The left hand was in an awkward position and several replacement hands were cut up before one could fit the elbow joint properly.

Third guy is Mr. 'I cost nearly 50 points', the double lighting claw marine. Those got chopped right off, with a chainsword in one hand and a plasgun in the other. By the way, for any kitbashers out there, the new raptor sprue is a treasure trove of bits and weapons. More chainswords and claws/fists than you'll know what to do with.

Fourth in the unit is the once-fister. The fist got lopped off and replaced with a chainsword, with a bladed tip that matched his own knife head. The boltgun strapped to his side was replaced with a plasgun.

The final guy in the group, sporting his stylish bone armor, had his power axe replaced with...a chain-naginata? Sure, why not. Ubiquitous plasgun in the other hand, he's ready to go.

The Dark Vengeance Chaos Lord was chopped up as well. His sword and plasma pistol were replaced with the disarmed chosen's lightning claws, a more effective choice (imo) than the sword/pistol combo for slicing up dudes.

Last but not least, the original inspiration for spending an inordinate amount of time on six dudes...the Helbrute, with his multimelta replaced with a plascannon and his fist arm lowered to a less tiring angle. I still haven't decided what to use as a head, but it shouldn't affect priming or painting him much.

They've been primed a light brown in preparation for a color scheme that has been narrowed down to probably a creamy-white armor color with dark gold trim. I was thinking something like P3's Menoth White Highlight, lightly doused in sepia wash, then highlighted back up with some shade of bone. A lighter gold on the metal trim, washed in devlan, then brought back up on the edges. Still not sure on the plasma and power weapon colors, or the metal bits around joints, weapons and backpacks.

More to come, barring any crippling hand injuries.

I'm not over fond of your rendition of the combi plasma. I prefer using CSM plasma pistols with bolters. I gotta get better pictures of my combi weapons photographed and up just for comparative reference and to show my own work..... .....one day maybe....
anyway, here's a terrible qality comparison:

I regret not having gotten an extra CSM commander, the model looks pretty good. I also like that you used the unfortunately designed bolter-wielding regulars. I'm still working out how to fix the gaps and holes on my reposed model.

I agree those make it look more like a combi-weapon. My problem was that putting the plasma section on top obscured the champ's face too much. For artistic balance it got underslung and given a combined barrel for both weapons to fire from.

Started basecoating the first guy, had forgotten how much of a pain it is to get a nice smooth white coat. If this army gets too big I might have to invest in an airbrush.

Would a PF and LC be better for a chaos lord?

That's the great thing about that particular kind of lightning claw. It's pretty much just a power fist with wolverine claws duct taped to the top, so you can run him as either fist/fist, claw/claw, or fist/claw with no need to model it differently.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Super basic basecoat+wash of what the color scheme will look like:

The gold will be a little darker and the white will be redone, and everything will get highlighted of course, but bone + gold is the gist of it. Still not sure what to use for the weapons. These are slaaneshi marines so boltgun+badab black is a bit too drab. Probably going to do the sword and plasma coils in purple. And give him a swarthy 'sat in a tanning booth all day' complexion.

Thoughts/criticisms/suggestions/angry diatribes?

Finished the Aspiring Champ. Only now do I realize the true awfulness of painting white. Once I get to the helbrute and convert up a rhino for them, I think it's gonna be airbrush time.

And his butt shot.

Went with a menoth white highlight base, devlan mud and sepia for shading and lining around metal, then brought it back up with bleached bone and menoth white highlight for...highlights. Metal was shining gold, doused in devlan and sepia in various amounts then highlighted with vallejo old gold. Sword was platinum covered in a blackish-purple ink, gun was gore red washed black. Plasma was bright green highlighted with brighter green.

Now that I sorta know what I'm doing, the rest shouldn't take nearly as long.

Looks great, especially for a white with a wash in the shading.

Well if you're gaming community doesn't mind it, Then you're ok. But don't expect the proxy to fly well anywhere else.

i've got a SM tactical sargeant with a chain-fist all the way back from the 4th edition of the SM codex... I keep getting called out for it till I mention that codex, and I just don't see the value in ripping the model apart or retiring it...

he runs either as a power-fist, or just a regular old CCW. He's got a bloody chain-fist...... I need to check the current 'dex to make sure, but him being the odd man out and clearly obvious, I've never encountered problems with him.
