I don't see why the bases need to be round.. each base, round or square (from gw for basic infantry) is 25mm... so why does it absolutely need to be round?

I can't find anywhere in the rulebook where it says the bases need to be round, but people at the FLGS raise a stink if some daemon models are mounted on squares.

Help appreciated. thanks guys

You are to assemble the models with the bases supplied with the box,
As for deamons they prob use square bases so they can use them for both Warhammer fantasy and 40k, as bases is allot more important in fantasy than they are in 40k.

I really don't see why they "have" to be round as long as they meet the millimeter spec. It sort of sounds like your FLGS people are just being "snobs".

Daemons specifically are allowed to be on square bases, actually.

The footprint of a unit on round bases is a lot larger than that of square bases, so it makes a big difference for deep striking and assualt.

So they can't fall into the sewer.

Because they've always been round. Because everything else in 40K uses a round base. And because they come both pictures for 40K with round bases, and the box gives you round bases for them.

Page 3 says the rules assume the models are using the bases they are supplied with. Since daemons are one of the handful of kits that can be used across game systems without, obviously it creates a problem that they are supplied with both.

However, the spirit of the game says that you play it the way it is intended. For 40K, since the dawn of time, that has meant round bases. Bases of a different shape allow for different placings of models, especially in assault, where most daemons end up in. Just bring your extra round bases and put the daemons on top of them for assault so the placement is equitable for everyone.

After moving them around a table for a few seconds, I see how assault would be in favorite of the daemons, corners, and they can each be closer to eachother. I guess I never realized that.

They came on square bases when I got them, I just need some extra round ones

Actually, a lot of the early edition 40K models were on square bases.

I think it was around 3rd/4th ed they went to all-round.

Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts

I think the "a lot" is fairly misleading. The only models ever supplied with square bases were larger models like Dreadnoughts and cavalry during Rogue Trader, whom it should be noted, didn't even have to have bases until they were converted to plastics. And this was simply because there weren't rounded cavalry and large bases back then, and certain models like the War Walker and Eldar Dreadnoughts couldn't stand up on their own like the more wider-footed Space Marine and Ork Dreadnoughts could.

All infantry models in 40K have always been supplied with 25mm round bases, and at no point were 25mm square bases part of a 40K exclusive model.

All 2nd edition MC came on square bases. Frankly, if it was a tyranid and wasn't a genestealer, termagant or hormagaunt it came on a square base. An 2nd ed SM dreadnoughts didn't have bases in the box, although the Eldar ones did.

Which again, is misleading, because bikes never had to be on bases, and there weren't even any bike models made between the first ones in like 1989 or 90, and contemporary ones which debuted in 1997.The reissued Space Marine bikes didn't even come with a base because at the time the bike was a vehicle which the rider could theoretically become separated from if it was destroyed.

And the metal bikes were out of the catalog for a long time prior to 1997. So a bike model that didn't exist apparently had a square base. Fair enough.

Um, the first plastic bikes came supplied with square bases.

etc. I still have an unused 3 bike set from 3rd edition. It has plastic bikes, with 3 metal riders, a serg with a power wep, a plasma, and a melta gun. It has 3 fantasy style square bases included.

People put them on rectangular bases because they didn't stand up right. The box did not supply them.

The older bikes did not come with bases. They were wide enough to stand on their own for the most part, like every other (ground) vehicle made back then except the Eldar stuff.

No no no man. He put some bikes on rectangular bases and took a picture of them. That's the way they came.

Locrian, I fully believe that when you bought that off EBay, or second hand somewhere off some guy, and somebody stuck their old rectangular bases in it that they used. But they weren't part of its original contents. I had that same box when it was brand new. I also had several of the old original 1 bike guys too. Didn't come with a base. People liked to mount attack bikes on large square bases too. That box didn't come with a square base either. Because I have one of the old metal guys.

Those bikes are actually a bit newer. I have some of the old metal bikes and those came on rectangular bases, not square. They also came in blisters if I remember correctly.

Some old orcs had square bases too, Shock Attack Gun and Lifta Droppa if I remember right.
