So, as I said elsewhere, i'm brand new to actually playing 40k, and am getting started with some finite purchases. I pre-ordered/received the new Strike-Force, and likewise owned and painted up an Assault on Black on Reach starter. As such I am good on Tacticals, and have a few other staples and such to begin the game with.

That said, I own and have sat on a copy of Space Hulk 3rd Ed for ages now. I think I would like to utilize it to get a jump-start on some purchases if possible. My wife may end up playing Tyranid which means we already essentially own 22 Genestealers and a Broodlord... giving us that much more incentive to crack the box.

So is there anything useful for a SM player in here? Twelve very fancy Terminators but they have such specific gear... I guess I can use the Captain/Librarian as generic Cap/Lib in Terminator armor HQ choices... right? Anything else I can cobble together with what I own (IE the 5 Termies in the AoBR starter as well...)?

I run 5 AOBR Termies plus a HQ with Hammer & Shield (SH) plus Assault Cannon (SH) plus Heavy Flamer (SH) plus 3 more (SH) with Bolters and fists. I then put them all in a land raider and assault out of it firing the flamer, assault bolters and assault cannon on the way in. The termies are easy to magnatize to bases so you can still use them in Space Hulk.

After that there is still enough bolter terms to make another unit if you prefer.

The stealers take more work to fit on the smaller bases (cut some of the base away) but can be perm mounted on the small bases as they fit on the SH board. The broodlord is a bigger base I think and will need to be mag'd also.

Put those terminators on bases and run them as Deathwing. You'll have a solid counts-as Belial and a Terminator Librarian leading two Terminator squads. This comes down mostly to the odd mix of wargear in there, which no other codex (barring Space Wolves) can really do.

Many players even prefer older models. I have several old school terminators in my army, and I love the outdated looking models. (It gives an artificial sense that I've been playing longer than I have. )

I have an older sm long barrel rocket launcher model that I use. I have no idea what edition it's from.

The 3rd ed (most recent) Space Hulk terminator models are really nice; but I don't think terminators are a particularly great unit in the new codex. Presently Genestealers aren't great for Tyranids either; although Ymgarl (the Elite version, which can pop up out of Reserve and immediately assault) are quite good.

Tyranids are rumored to be getting a new codex soon; I'd recommend at least waiting until then to find out if Genestealers/Brood Lords are really good in the new book or not. I suspect, however, that either way you're going to be better off selling Space Hulk and putting the money toward models which will be more useful for your armies. Either that, or keeping them for playing the game, which is pretty darn fun.

Oh, I LOVE Space Hulk as a self-contained board-game, so any models I liberate for WH40k use, would still be used in the board-game periodically. I certainly can't sell it as it was a very special gift to myself which I bought when I first started feeling like i'd "made it" professionally. It was something my family could never afford when I was a kid, so it felt like a big deal to buy it for myself without worrying about price when it released. :-)

I love the way the models look though, and was just hoping for a way to get some extra excuse to pull them out and put them on a table. I will say, I do like the idea of running several of them and the AOBR Termies as an assault-minded squad. Sounds like a fun.... odd... thing to spring on opponents from time to time, to keep the local meta types guessing. :-p

Terminators are fine if you are playing casually, so long as you use them carefully (target units they can handle, keep them away from stuff they can't). I'm not sure what the exact loadouts for the termies are, but it looks like you can get at least 5 tac termies with a HF or AC, and most of a squad of Assault termies, and at worst the spare models are blinged enough to work as captains without raising any eyebrows. The option of deathwing counts-as is not a bad one, gives them a few neat tricks and works quite well.

If I remember, the Cyclone missile launcher is generally a favorite, followed by the assault cannon, with the heavy flamer being last. It's not a bad weapon, it's just that the other two don't need the Termi squad standing on top of their enemy and are useful against things that aren't infantry.

I agree in that the HF is not the best choice (although I am personally quite a fan of it), but you have the AC still, and if you want a CML you can get one on ebay for not that much and stick it on a SB/PF termie for even more options. Really, my point is that the SH models are so awesome that they deserve to be on the table, regardless of effectiveness.

Termies are great if you know how to use probably.

Oh yes, they're beautifully detailed and modeled. I frequently use their genestealers and broodlords for my Tyranids.
