There are a scattered few references to the Ultramarines recruiting from the Damnos defenders in the new War Zone books. I was under the impression that the SM implants had to be implanted at a young age, and the IG recruited from people over that age.

I may be mistaken, but the references I've seen have been in regards to them marshalling standard forces in addition to the Marines themselves. Kind of how it works with the Macragge PDFs and regiments. They're not Marines, but the Chapter did still recruit them all the same.

I share that impression. HH-novels specifically mention examples of main characters being too old. Luther for example gets extensive bio-augmentations, but is still inferior to regular marines (at least smaller, and he doesn't get the black carapace). Kor Phaeron too,

But then you have the leadership of the 13th company of the spacewolves consisting of mmen who where at least in their late 30s when they received the geneseed.

And the Black templar recruiting aspirants at least in their late teens early 20s.

Some IG regiments use children and teenagers.

Occasionally there are authors who didn't read the source material, and screw up. If a Space Marine is recruited outside of the 8-10 range, chances are the author just didn't do his due diligence when researching 40K. Or he pulled a Space Wolves and just figured that rules and canonicity are for suckers.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

not sure about the Black Templars but the original grey beards were barely 40 out of hundreds of men that tried and died. The emperor was surprised that "so many" survived hinting that he expected a very small number to survive which points at the process could work on a older male but only one of exceptional quality or perhaps some unknown biological trait. At least that how I like to make sense of it all.

The damnos quote is something along the lines of "so tenacious were the imperial guard defenders that it is a testament to their skill that a full squad of tactical marines were able to be recruited from their ranks"

That does not explain Luther and other bastardised Dark Angels who did pass the Dark Angel trials but where simply to old.

The main character from the damnation crusade graphic novel was at the very least a late teen when he was recruited for the Black templar.

Page?

I've seen: the Ultras recruting the "second generation" of the Damnosians in the book. ( page 19 )
Sounds like young People and not members of the IG who served for some time.

Yes. The UM pulled a bunch of Damnosians off and set them up as a colony on one of the worlds in Ultramar, where they expanded and rebuilt. They had children, and enough were suitable that an entire squad of scouts is made up of second-gen Damnosian refugees.

There is quite good odds that the Guard on Damnos were recruiting children and teenagers by the end of the war they were so desperate.

Yea it did but to be fair the space wolves are the exception, not the rule. The attrition rate for aspirants in the space wolves seems very high, perhaps partly due to their recruitment of warriors older than would be ideal. The canis helix seems to do something funky as well, which might make the process more viable to older warriors.

Novel authors often have their own ideas on how things work. They need not always be compatible with what you read elsewhere.

But I think it might help greatly if someone would deliver the actual word-for-word quote rather than "something along the lines".

There is also a partially converted guy who tries to kill the remembrancers and Sinderman at one point. He's had most of the upgrades but his body isn't fully adapted yet. It's clear he is an adult soldier from the IG.

Just saying, even in HH adults are shown being 'upgraded'.

People confuse age vs physical fitness as the requirement and I never heard them implanting children under 12 most would be to fragile for the surgeries young can mean teenager or 20s as these people have old age of a couple hundred at least. Young is realtive. That being said anything older than 25 is very rare unless they like going through recruits. ( which my chapter does.)

Most Space Marine trials, where they choose their new Initiates, involve children under the age of 13. In one case, I seem to remember one candidate being as young as 8.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

White Dwarf mentions the range for phases 1-3 of the implantation process to begin at age 10. I'd not be surprised if one or more Chapters would start a bit younger, though - in M41, the creation of a Space Marine is more ritualistic art rather than science, with each Chapter differing a little when it comes to details.

I would like this reference for most. Also I didn't say that young didn't happen just it isn't nessarily common either.

I've never seen an exact age reference for the trials, but given the fluff about the implants I'd say one could deduce it from that. The trials would have to take place prior to implantation, after all.
