Do you think it would be weird to take my paints and models up to college. I spend a lot of time doing nothing and surfing the internet and could use that time more constructively to paint some models. What do you guys think?

If after doing all of your schoolwork you think think that you will have free time, and you'd think you want to spend that free time modelling or gaming, yes take them. If you think they will interfere getting your schoolwork done, no leave them at home.

Hang a space marine over your door as a charm to keep girls away.
Personally i found i had loads of free time while at university but not enough space to store my models and paint..

I hang out with people I am just saying I have that time. like when I have no class from like 11 to 2 and all my friends are in class and I have already eaten. I just have this time. I am taking 14 hours but idk it just seems like there is time. Automatically Appended Next Post: Ma55ter_fett wrote:Hang a space marine over your door as a charm to keep girls away.

Study while they're in class, party when they're not.
If you got the space go for it I guess.

OP, it's college, where weird hobbies are common. Nobody is going to care if you bring some 40k models to paint. Your only problem is going to be the lack of space in the average dorm room, there's no way I would have had any space to work on 40k stuff until I had my own apartment.
So is hanging stereotypes about what girls want over your door.
|
There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |

Definitely bring your paints/hobby stuff with you. I lived at home while in university, but I spent enough time with my friends/heard their stories to know that dorm/residence life is way too hyped up. I'd be bored out of my mind if I had to wander around campus/chill in the dorm to pass my spare time.
Just make sure you have a safe place to put your stuff/lock it up. It would suck if it got damaged when you were out or not paying attention.
Then again my advice is questionable as I was TFG in uni: loud, smartass, caused disturbances in library, wayyy too much time on my hands.

I say bring them as it will help teach time management while giving you something enjoyable to do. Not sure how your dorm is, but mine has enough space under the bed to store a bag of minis and such. Do it and have fun. Make sure you get out of the dorm occasionally though. Those things are good for a person.

If its something you enjoy doing...then don't take a 4 year hiatus from it for no real reason. You have the time, you have the space, and you have the desire to do it. Go nuts.
As long as you get on track with time management you shouldent have any problems.

I took a contingent of my army and paints while in college and I think I picked up a brush to paint or actually played a grand total of one time. Though it did make an interesting conversation piece, I don't think I would bring them again. Plenty of time now that I have a steady job and source of income to pick gaming back up.

Hell, I didn't start wargaming until I was in college. I had my models in bags and cases stashed in my closet, and had my painting station sitting on a table in my room. I'd paint when everyone else was off doing homework because my degree was a lull of nothing but reading and then a flurry of papers.

Nothing wrong with it. You probably don't need ALL of your hobby supplies, but take some.
Also, get out to the student union and meet girls. They have boobs and stuff.

If you have space, go for it. Back in the day, I took my stuff up the first time I returned home to visit. I didn't take hobby stuff up first thing, as I wasn't sure of space and time available. Turns out, I had both.
If you learn one thing at college, learn how to manage your time. You need to balance studying, socializing, and hobby time. I had a friend who flunked out because all he did was play computer games.
But do get out and meet people. One of my big regrets is moving off campus my junior year. Without living in the same building as my college friends my hermit nature took over and I drifted away from them. I could balance the hobby/study time, but not the social. I had picked up with a group of townies at the FLGS that I gamed with a few times a week, so had that social outlet.

I took mine to college, had an open door policy (left it open while painting) and had girls stop by to ask what I was doing. When I showed them, they loved the dedication I put in and thought the painting was awesome. It's not a magnet against girls in college (girls in question were sorority and prissy girls, not gaming girls), but it's not a guarantee to attract them either. Take your paints and a few models, you'll find time.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I'd say take stuff like this, but make it as much of a small, manageable 'kit' as you can. Dorms are tight, and your room-mates might not understand that the little plastic spacemen are important to you. Keep everything in toolboxes so you can pull out a mini or two, paint, and then pack up when done.
If there's a club or group of regular games at your school, it'd be a good way to make some friends.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

I got into 40k in college back in 1993. Some of my best friends still play 40k. I found that 40k was a good way to spend saturday night after having way too much fun on Friday.

This is a good point. My last roomate I had in college kept bringing over friends with sticky fingers. Put your stuff away when you're not using it.

I am shy as hell, but somehow managed to make a sweet group of friends pretty fast. But like I said previously I just do have way too much time, and more than enough space, it is a downsize from what I had at home but still more than enough. And there is enough time to paint. Don't drink, or have TV, and I have seen about every show worth watching on netflix. Sometimes when I have that hour or two here and there, there is a much better use of my time than sitting around not doing anything but browsing the web.

I started using this site in my third semester of college, and I've never stopped painting. Before that I was mostly on Bolter and Chainsword. You can find places to play around your school too, since college towns usually have a game store or game club somewhere.

Don't you yanks have shared dorms (two to a room)?
My only comment is that you wan to be able to lock your stuff away so some cunny funt doesn't see you models as something little they can mess with as part of a practical joke. Even a mate might not see the value and effort we tend to put into a model.

Yeah, I'm just going to say it. This is even more of a reason NOT to take your paints.
I mean, come on. Even Howard wouldn't bring his paints in that situation.
