ok, so I tested this out last night at my FLGS, and I felt it worked quite well. I know it isn't going to win any tournaments, but wondering what people thought about its viability as a TAC list

Spoiler:
HQ
Swarmlord -265pts

Tyrant Guard (LW) -65

Tyranid Prime (LW/BS, ST, TS, AG, Regen) -125

ELITE
DoM w/ Pod -130

2x Zoanthrope w/ Pod -160

2x Zoanthrope w/Pod -160

TROOPS
10x Termagants -50

10x Termagants -50

Tervigon (AG, TS, 3x powers) -210

Tervigon (AG, TS, 3x powers) -210

FAST ATTACK
6x Shrike (AG, TS, ST, 2x BS) -330

HEAVY
Carnifex w/ Pod (2x TL Devs) -230

TOTAL
2000pts

The basic idea was to try and get IA on the Swarm, then make sure he had End and Warp Speed up on him from somewhere (this game it happened that he gave his "unit" WS and himself IA ). I had the Tervs both go 3x biomancy, and 3 of 4 Zoans go 1x biomancy, 1x telepathy each. Then use the pod squads to funnel everything to the Swarmstar (Swarm, TGuard, Prime) while the shrikes go clean up nuisance units/contest objectives and the Tervs/gants go give birth on objectives.

I already know a 3x Drake army would chew through this, but since I started, I think my FLGS has only seen 1 guy running that list, and he is rare.

C&C appreciated.

Seems like a whole lot of fun, the only thing I would suggest is dropping the Shrike unit. Yes they hit like a brick, but once they realise they are wasting shots into the Swarmstar (Say on the turn you get T9) then where will all those shots go? Tervigons maybe? Or the massive fast beat stick who's defence is covered solely by a 5+ save? They are simply asking to be pulse rifled down by any respectable amount of fire power. When for there points you could get a Trygon with regen which would be a *MUCH* better distraction/in your face threat unit then the shrikes. and then take a 2 Biovore as well to clear out chaff as well!

So how I would implement those ideas would be like:

Spoiler:
HQ
Swarmlord -265pts

Tyrant Guard (LW) -65

Tyranid Prime (LW/BS, ST, TS, , Regen) -115

ELITE
DoM w/ Pod -130

2x Zoanthrope w/ Pod -160

2x Zoanthrope w/Pod -160

TROOPS
10x Termagants -50

10x Termagants -50

Tervigon (AG, TS, 3x powers) -210

Tervigon (AG, TS, 3x powers) -210

HEAVY
Carnifex w/ Pod (2x TL Devs) -230

Trygon prime w/ Regen 265

2 biovores 90pts

TOTAL 2000

Just how I would optimise the list.

I like the shrikes because they are 3 wound, extremely mobile models that hit like a truck. They are really more of a distraction anyway, and with as high a target saturation as I am able to give, it becomes more beneficial for people to target the funneling units over the shrikes and Star. I use the shrikes for their mobility, to sweep up things that arent going to be funneled.

I also am using units I have already. lol I wish I had a Trygon or 3 at my disposal (1 for trygon/prime, 1 for mawloc, 1 for a nifty Harpy conversion), but as a recent college grad, I'm still broke. Switching for a couple biovores I've never found overly useful (most of the people I play against have been using CSM, Daemons, and the occasional SW). Maybe I'll try a proxy of the Trygon to see how it goes.

Plus, I love my shrike conversions. lol (took ravener lower bodies, warrior torso, open-mouthed warrior 2 prong head, wings from the WHFB Vargheists. Wings in the top arm slot, swords in slot 2, then ST for slot 3) So pretty...

I also like the idea of the trygon actually having a ranged attack for overwatch (as people tend to really want to avoid a charging trygon/shrike-sword squad with warp speed)

Pictures!!!!

On topic: I like shrikes too, but I find them to be too expensive, and a unit like that you want to keep in close combat. Their problem is they'll wipe any unit they come up against then just be sitting in the open to be shot....

Play some games with them and report back! I'd love to hear how they go!

I converted my carnifexs to harpys and they look pretty cool.

You can see it on my flgs facebook page (with some other models.

You can see my shrikes on there as well. I need to get them on flying poles still though. The wings where from maxmini on the shrikes, the harpy wings are gw dragon or balrog wings, cant remember which.

Yeah, I'm going to be using the Balrog wings on my harpy, but back on topic, I took on a Necron Wraithstar list last night, and came out ahead with 1 wound on TGuard and Prime left, Swarmy had 3 left. Then I promptly regen'd up to 3 on the Prime. Oddly enough, my weakest performer was the Tervigon. It hit menopause after one turn... and 5 gaunts... then just served as a bullet sponge...

I don't mind them, but I hate that they seem to be about the only staple for this codex... So as such, I've been experimenting with builds that minimize their necessity.

Now, Swarmstar on the other hand, is a nasty little beasty... nigh unstoppable when you take Biomancy powers on him. At one point last night, he had Iron Arm (from himself), Warp Speed (from the Zoe), and Endurance (from the Terv.. he also had this, but I figured why not save the warp charge for the Telepathy Primaris) on his unit (Iron arm only affects the caster, but since there is no majority toughness in the unit, they all use his). Swarmlord had +3S, T, I, and A.. and the unit as a whole had all the nasty benefits of Endurance stacked on top of it. So that is effectively a S9, T9, A7, I+3 challenging death machine...

oh, and you also get FNP, LoS, a 4++ in CC, regen (on the Prime), EW, ignore armor, enemies in btb are init 1, and force every successful invul save to reroll... Holy... Crap...

I just wound up running at the closest threat and laughing at overwatch, chewing through the unit, consolidating d6" every turn after the first. (had to get in threat range turn 1)
